Does your child like to dance? The Onondaga Free Library will be hosting a new dance program online using Zoom this summer called “Bop, Drop, and Read” with Sara Kelly.
Kelly is in the 11th grade at West Genesee High School and is working on her Girl Scout Gold Award with the theme of “promoting dance in the community.”
In an interview, Kelly explains the reason for choosing this particular focus for her project.
“Dance has created so many fantastic opportunities for me and has shown me that with discipline and hard work, you accomplish anything, as well as making some great friends and finding awesome mentors,” she said. “I want to do my part to break down social and economic barriers to dance education so everyone can experience the joy of dance.”
Kelly has been dancing for over thirteen years and dances on the competition team and in the company program at The Movement Box Dance Studio in Lakeland, as well as in the West Genesee High School dance program.
She feels all children should be exposed to dance at a young age to help develop creative and athletic skills, discipline, and hopes all will feel welcome in the world of dance.
Classes will be Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. for the month of August.
The classes will be fun, interactive, and use imagery to learn beginning dance steps. The class will end with a virtual story time geared to children ages 4-6. Kelley is also raising money to purchase more library books on dance for kids.
Be on the lookout for some fun new dance books for you children.
