Despite COVID-19 keeping the library’s doors closed, community members can still turn to the library for a source of ongoing free entertainment and learning for kids, teens, and adults this summer.
Fayetteville Free Library’s Summer Fun program began June 28 and extends through Aug. 15. During these seven weeks, participants of all ages (babies-adults) can attend special virtual events and track their reading digitally to win prizes and surprises.
In an effort to support local businesses, the library has purchased and will be raffling off 10 $25 gift cards each week to area businesses including SweetFrog, SnoTop, Papa Gallo, Twin Trees, and Four Seasons. Participants can earn up to two chances to win each week by 1) reading and logging one hour or more via the free Beanstack app/website, and 2) attending one virtual event or program. There will also be special surprises that participants can pick up from the library during the summer.
Virtual programs, on Zoom, being offered by the library include weekly interactive storytimes on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10 a.m.; a four week Music and Movement series for ages 2-5 on Fridays at 10 a.m.; weekly hands-on STEM experiments, guided nature activities, and “take and make” crafts for school aged kids; guided DIY Activities for middle grades and teens; virtual summer camps; crafts, book clubs, genealogy and classes for adults, and more. These programs are free and open to all – you do not have to be a library cardholder to participate.
Many of these programs include a “grab bag” component, where individuals can pick up complementary supplies from library in advance of the program. For example, participants who register for the Music and Movement series will be able to pick up a bag with an egg shaker, scarf, rhythm sticks and bubbles for their child to use during the series. Likewise, participants who register for the library’s Virtual Summer Camps will receive materials to complete at-home experiments and activities each day.
