Baltimore Woods announces new adventure camp
Summer looks different in a lot of ways this year, and for families looking to keep children entertained and engaged in July and August, Baltimore Woods Nature Center is bringing the wonder of summer camp and nature exploration home to them.
A brand new series called Outdoor Adventures is set up to connect young explorers to the natural world around them through daily sessions with experienced staff, live demonstrations, and exciting activities that are tailored to a child’s age. Starting July 6,
Outdoor Adventures is being offered as a weekly series through Aug. 28. Sessions are available for ages 4-5, the Nature’s Little Explorer series, and for grades K-8.
Families will receive a packet of daily activity guides prior to the first day of camp and have the opportunity to sign out materials such as nets and binoculars to help at-home campers get up close and observe the natural world around them.
Each day of Outdoor Adventures kicks off with a Zoom meeting with a counselor and camp group – a time for important social interaction and sharing of daily discoveries. Adventurers will then have the rest of the day to complete a set of staff-guided, but self-directed, activities that can be adapted to a family’s schedule and are structured so kids can explore nature in their backyard, at a local park, or at Baltimore Woods! Campers will track their adventures in a nature journal and through photographs. At the end of the week the group will come together one last time to enjoy some s’mores and share their favorite discoveries from their outdoor adventures with a virtual celebration.
Outdoor Adventures is the most recent virtual program offering from Baltimore Woods Nature Center, who, for more than 50 years, has worked to promote place-based environmental education that connects people to nature.
“For over 30 years our Summer Nature Day Camp program has provided children with the opportunity to get outside and explore nature, actively learning about themselves and the world around them through nature-based play and activity. While we know in-person summer camp is not the right fit for all families this summer, we believe that the opportunity to spend time outside exploring the outdoors and learning about the world around us is critical for children, and we are excited to be able to connect with our campers no matter where they are,” Executive Director Whitney Lash-Marshall said.
Families signing up for Outdoor Adventures with Baltimore Woods are guaranteed a summer of wonder, exploration, and learning.
Each week-long session costs $100 and requires a family-level membership to Baltimore Woods Nature Center.
Multi-child and multi-week discounts are available. Registration is open and spots are filling fast. Visit baltimorewoods.org/camp for more details or to register.
