Baltimore Woods receives funding, plans expansion
The celebrated partnership between Baltimore Woods Nature Center and Central New York Land Trust was recognized by a grant to Baltimore Woods Nature Center on behalf of a joint land acquisition project between the two organizations to purchase 90 acres.
The funding was announced in December as part of the 2019 Regional Economic Development Council awards.
The matching grant of $189,417 will help the two nonprofits acquire and protect land directly adjacent to the 182-acre Baltimore Woods nature preserve in Marcellus.
With generous donations from individuals, businesses, and foundations, along with these matching grant funds from the state program, the two nonprofits are currently working to acquire this property and expand the existing preserve by nearly 50% by 2022.
This additional land will conserve green space, preserve a natural corridor in the Nine Mile Creek Valley, and create new opportunities for both outdoor recreation and environmental education.
For over 40 years, the Central New York Land Trust and Baltimore Woods Nature Center have partnered to protect and preserve Baltimore Woods as a unique place for the Central New York community to access, appreciate, and learn about nature.
The land expansion is part of a larger, multi-year capital campaign for Baltimore Woods Nature Center, which includes an endowment for stewardship of the new property, an expansion of the interpretive center at Baltimore Woods, and development of new trails on the expanded acreage.
