A busy month planned at Camillus Senior Center

The following events for October 2017 are being offered at the Camillus Senior Center 25 ½ First St. Camillus, NY.
The senior center offers daily lunches served at noon Monday through Friday. Seniors 60+ and their spouses of any age are eligible. Suggested contribution is only $3. Guests under 60 are $6. Call the center at 315-672-5820 for more information or to sign up.
Catfish – Drivers Needed! CatFISH is a volunteer organization that provides transportation to medical and dental appointments for ambulatory senior citizens who reside in the Town of Camillus. Rides are given on Tuesday, Wednesdays and Thursdays. If you would like to help your neighbor and become a CatFISH driver, please call 701-5949- Drivers are scheduled for only one or two days per month.
Afternoon Art
Join us for a fun and relaxing afternoon painting a beautiful ocean scene. No artistic ability required! All participants will paint the same picture but give it their own twist. Instructor will give simple, step by step instructions. All supplies will be provided. (Sample is on display at the center) Wednesday, Oct. 11, 1 to 3 p.m. $25 per person. Stop in to sign up.
Jewelry Making
Come make a 7 inch toggle bracelet or earrings with beads and wire. Monday, Oct. 16 from 9:30 to 11 a.m.

Painted Treasures
Come paint a lovely project. All supplies included. Thursday, Oct. 19 from 10 to 11:45 a.m. we will be painting a beautiful Candy Apothecary Jar. $15 per person. Please stop by the office to view a sample or photo of the project. Please call 315-672-5820 to register.
Card Stamping
Make beautiful homemade greeting cards using the rubber stamping technique. All materials are provided.

Art Club
Our drawing and painting class has been suspended until we can find an instructor. If you know of someone who might be qualified and interested, please let us know. In the meantime, we will have Art Club for artists who want to meet up and work on their own projects. Thursdays from 1 to 3 p.m. Call the office at 315-672-5820 for more information.
Turning Stone Casino
Enjoy the day on your own playing bingo or slots. Monday, Oct. 16. The bus leaves the center at 9 a.m. and returns at 5:30 p.m., $20 must be 55 or older – (does not include driver gratuity). Receive $15 in bingo bucks or casino play and a $5 meal certificate. Come visit the center to sign up.
AARP Smart Driver Course
Learn defensive driving techniques to keep you safe on the road and receive a reduction on your car insurance. Wednesday, Oct. 18 from 8:30 to 3 p.m. – You must be here for the entire class! $20 for AARP members/$25 for non-members. Make checks payable to AARP – a check for each person – You may bring a lunch or order lunch at the center – Participants should bring their unexpired driver’s license and AARP membership card if applicable. Class size is limited so early registration is recommended. Phone registration will not be accepted. Payment must accompany registration form. Call the center for more information.

Stretch, Strengthen and Balance
All seniors are invited to our next session Oct. 24 to Dec. 7 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., $15 per person /6 week session (12 classes) This program includes exercises to accommodate seniors of all ability levels. Strength and balance training exercises are done either in a seated position or standing with a chair.
Trivia Day
Let’s have a little fun with our lunch! Teams or tables will compete against each other to answer a variety of trivia questions. Prizes awarded. Wednesday, Oct. 25 from noon to 1 p.m. No charge to play but a donation for lunch. Sign up at the front desk or call 315-672-5820.
Stages of Grieving
This workshop will explore the three stages of grieving: anticipatory grief, grief and new beginnings (how to move on from grief). Although each person experiences grief in their own way, there are universal messages we all share. For those who have a love one with dementia, the grieving process often begins long before the person has actually passed away. Presenter Mike Massurin from At Home Independent Living will share some valuable information. Pumpkin Carving
When was the last time you carved a pumpkin? Join us for an afternoon of fun while we make jack o’lanterns and drink cider. Bring your own pumpkin (any size) and we’ll provide the supplies. Monday Oct. 30 at 1 p.m. No charge, but call ahead to register at 315-672-5820.
Halloween Party
Tuesday, Oct. 31 from 11:30 to 1 p.m. Let’s have some fun celebrating Halloween! Come to lunch dressed in costume and enter our contest! Winner of the best costume gets a Prize! Our neighborhood advisor from the Salvation Army, Megan Coon, is here to help with SNAP and HEAP applications, phone discounts, EISEP and other services. She is here on the first Thursday of each month from 11:30 to 12:30 p.m. There is no charge for this service. You may reach a neighborhood advisor by calling 315-479-3607.
The Senior Center offers a variety of programs, clubs and fun activities. There is a game room with two pool tables, a ping pong table, puzzles and board games. You are welcome to come and play!
The center will be closed Monday, Oct. 9 for Columbus Day.
