The multi-part post-season process for area track and field teams starts this week with league championships in the CNY Counties League and Onondaga High School League.
West Genesee, who is part of the CNYCL fray, improved its regular-season mark to 3-2 by rolling past the Nottingham Bulldogs last Tuesday afternoon in a 117-23 decision.
During a sweep of the running events, Valerie Pirro was first in the 100-meter hurdles in 17.7 seconds and the 400-meter hurdles in 1:09.5. She also paired with Nicole Paone, Megan Hanahan and Kelsey Shanahan to take the 4×100 relay in 55.8 seconds and, in the triple jump, went 29 feet 3 ½ inches for a third title.
Paone, for her part, went 1:07.5 to win the 400-meter dash before Kelsey Fox took the 200-meter dash (28.0 seconds) and after Megan Delia won the 100-meter dash in 13.2 seconds. In the 4×400 relay, Paone, Fox, Maria Matkoski and Elise Dunshee posted 4:26.4.
On her own, Matkoski had a time of 5:15.8 in the 1,500-meter run as Dunshee ran 800 meters in 2:25.2 and Carly Benson took the 3,000-meter run in 10:35.2. Delia, Kendall Dombroske, Sarah Ferranti and Bridget Spiddle won the 4×400 in 10:43.5 to complete a relay sweep.
Sierra Chemine was victorious in the long jump, going 14’3”, while Hannah Garity cleared 7 feet in the pole vault and Michela Kashay topped 4’8” in the high jump.
Marcellus split its meet with Mexico, falling to the Tigers 79-62 on the boys side but winning the girls meet over the Tigers 99-42, with Mary-Catherine Coon taking the 100 (13.0 seconds) and 200 (27.7 seconds) sprints, also clearing 4’8” in the high jump.
Zoe Higgins was victorious in the 400 hurdles (1:14.6), and 100 hurdles, which she claimed in 17.3 seconds. Tori Stopen, in the 1,500, prevailed in 5:30.5, with Emily Townsend beating the field in the 3,000 in 12:24.3. Johanna Sylcox was first in the discus (72’7 ½”) as Coon and Higgins helped the 4×100 relay team finish first in 54.5 seconds..
Jordan-Elbridge met Skaneateles on Thursday afternoon, losing both ends of that meet to the Lakers, though the boys meet was a closer contest, the Eagles falling by a 78-63 margin.
Tyler Jackson led J-E, edging out teammate Brendan Bourque, 12:29.0 to 12:29.9, in the 3,200 before unleashing a top triple jump of 37’1 ½”. Russell Hines cleared 5’2” in the high jump, with Justin Quinn throwing the discus 122’2” and Brad Marshall winning the shot put with a throw of 45’6”.
Skaneateles countered by winning most of the races, though Zach Rink matched the Lakers’ Tommy Hagen in the 110 hurdles, both going 16.4 seconds, and Nathan Hollis won outright in the mile in 4:56.5.
Hines, Austin Milton, Anthony Ortiz Jr. and Dan Weichert claimed the 4×100 relay in 47.4 seconds, with Milton second in the 200 (24.5 seconds), Hines second in the 800 (2:06 flat) and Ethan Kinney second in the 400 sprint in 54.4 seconds.
In the girls Eagles’ 104.5-36.5 defeat to the Lakers, Rebekah Blonski prevailed twice, going 19.2 seconds in the 100 hurdles before a top long jump of 15’2 ½”.
Abby Gugel won the 800-meter run in 2:24.3 and Julie Hines tied Skaneateles’ Mia Grasso in the high jump, each of them clearing 4’10”. But the Lakers swept all three relays and got two wins apiece from Makayla Dickensen (shot put, discus) and Maddie Peterson (200 and 400 sprints).
The weekend schedule began with Friday’s Oneida Invitational, where, on the boys side, Marcellus’ Noah Townsend was second in the high jump, clearing 5’10”, trailing only Mexico’s Hunter Hellinger (6’2”). Mike Abbott tied for fourth in the pole vault, topping 11’6”.
Solvay’s Garrett Lee had a fourth-place long jump of exactly 19 feet and helped the Bearcats take fifth (46.83 seconds) in the 4×100. Colton Francemone was sixth (1:02.42) in the 400 hurdles and Jonah Cavallo took sixth in the 800 in 2:02.81.
Meanwhile, in the girls meet, Marcellus saw Sylcox win the shot put with a top throw of 32’10 ½”, well clear of F-M’s Brittany Travis (32’1”) in the second spot. Stopen her way to third place in the 800 in a season-best 2:26.26. Higgins was sixth in the 100 hurdles in 17.91 seconds and seventh in the 400 hurdles, with Coon sixth (13.39 seconds) in the 100 sprint and tying for fifth in the high jump, clearing 4’6”.
Solvay’s Katie Harrington earned 2,549 points in the pentathlon to finish second behind Fayetteville-Manlius’ Christabel Ezidiegwu (2,627 points). Waters made it to fourth place in the discus, throwing it 89’6”.
Some of West Genesee’s girls made it to the Tully Friday Night Invitational, where Matkoski won the 400 sprint in 1:00.13 and Dombroskie (1:03.62) finished fourth, but Dombroskie would prevail in the 1,500 in 5:10.39. The Wildcats also won the distance medley relay as Matkoski, Benson, Fox and Delia posted a time of 12:20.30. Madalyn Benson was fourth in the 400 hurdles.
