Three more league matches remained for the Skaneateles boys tennis team before going into this week’s various Section III tournaments – and the Lakers would win just one of them.
Skaneateles handled the Phoenix Firebirds 4-1 last Tuesday afternoon, which included a singles sweep. Zach Driscoll defeated Zach VanGorder 6-0, 6-4, with Ethan Weldon working past Ben Bulgrien 6-3, 6-2 and Dan Stabile handling Ned Greenough 7-5, 6-4.
Moving to doubles competition, Mike Soden and Grant Thompson could not hold on in a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 defeat, but John Hartnett and Connor Jones handled Lorenzo Camponino and Scott Williams-Clark in a 6-3, 6-1 decision.
A day later, the Lakers dropped a 3-2 decision to Westhill, this despite an exciting singles comeback where Driscoll, in three sets, held off Sabastian Ramirez 2-6, 7-5, 10-8.
Skaneateles saw its record fall to 7-7 on Friday with a 5-0 loss to Christian Brothers Academy. In the closest match, Matt Oliver and Anthony Panasci took a 6-4, 6-2 doubles defeat to Geoff Parkes and Josh Popp. Ryan Baily and Malcolm Lombardi lost to Steve Castellini and Tommy Daviau 6-4, 6-0.
Griffin Oland, in singles play, fell to Jameson Keppeler 6-3, 6-1 as Driscoll lost to Greg Maziuk 6-0, 6-1 and Jones fell to Dean Vlassis 6-0, 6-0.
Skaneateles will players at the sectional Class C-1 tournament that start Monday at Syracuse University’s Skytop Courts, with Weldon in second single, Zach Driscoll in first singles and Connor Driscoll in third singles. Bayly and Lombardi pair up in first double, with Jones and Panasci the top seeds in third doubles.
