Neither the Cazenovia nor Chittenango girls golf teams had to travel too far to participate in last Tuesday’s Onondaga High School League Tournament at Woodcrest Golf Club – in fact, the Bears were on its home course.
Yet just like the regular season, the race turned into a two-team duel at the top, with CBA avenging a defeat to Jamesville-DeWitt at Butternut Creek five days earlier by an eight-shot margin, 369-376, and pulling away from the other seven teams in the field.
That included Cazenovia, who was sixth with 419, but placed three girls inside the top 20.
Senior Samantha Quarantillo made it all the way to eighth place with an 18-hole score of 95 – 47 on the front nine, 48 on the back nine at Woodcrest. Kelsi Fredericks posted a 100 and got into a tie for 12th, while sophomore Maleigha Ellithorpe had a 103 that left her alone in 17th place.
Meanwhile, Chittenango posted a team score of 490, eighth in the nine-team field, with no individuals within the top 25. Despite her team’s second-place team fnish, J-D senior Jung-Hye Kim claimed the individual title with an 82, five shots ahead of Marcellus freshman Mary Colella.
Chittenango had lost, 222-239, to East Syracuse Minoa the day before, a match where Sara Schmidt shot a 53 at Arrowhead, seven shots behind the Spartans’ Audrey Rivers. Rachel Cleary had a 55, with Amelia Biviano posting a 57.
Now, with the league tournament done, the Cazenovia and Chittenango golfers could turn their attention to the Section III tournament, which would take place exactly one week later at Kanon Valley Country Club in Oneida.
Before that, though, the Lakers had one more league match, on Wednesday, against Westhill, where it lost a 184-201 decision to the Warriors to see its record fall to 3-8.
On that same day, Cazenovia’s boys golf team defeated Solvay 204-244 at Cazenovia Country Club, improving to 8-2 on the season, just behind Skaneateles (9-1) in the OHSL Liberty division standings.
Cody Thorp shot a 37, just ahead of Trevor Nourse, who had a 39. Charlie Schaffner had a 41 as Nick Becker posted a 42. Hayden Fassett and Tim Hunt both posted rounds of 45.
Cazenovia won again on Friday, 211-261, over Altmar-Parish-Williamstown at CCC. Schaffner, with a 38, beat out Thorp’s 39 and Nick Becker’s round of 40, but they all topped the Rebels’ Kenny Bendetto, who had a 43. Tyler Modzelewski managed a 44 and Tim Hunt shot a 50.
On Monday, the boys Lakers have its Section III tournament, which leads to the state qualifier later in the week at Colgate University’s Seven Oaks course in Hamilton.
