Though the Marcellus and Westhill girls golf teams could not quite keep up with the leaders during last Tuesday’s Onondaga High School League Tournament at Woodcrest Golf Club, Mustangs freshman Mary Colella did finish near the top.
Amid windy conditions at Woodcrest, Colella shot 41 on the front nine and 46 on the back nine. Her total of 87 beat every individual except Jamesville-DeWitt senior Jung-Hye Kim, who posted an 82 by shooting 42 on the front nine and 40 on the back nine.
Westhill finished ahead of Marcellus on the team side, though, getting to third place at 401, trailing only Christian Brothers Academy, who won with 369, and J-D, who was second with 376.
Junior Shannon Bunce led the Warriors, posting an 18-hole score of 97 that tied her with Marcellus senior Avery Mordaunt for ninth place.
Just behind them, Westhill junior Dori Klein had a 99, getting 11th place by herself, while freshman Julia Miesner tied for 14th place with a 101 and sophomore Gabi LoCurto shared 18th place with a 104. Marcellus junior Hannah Abbott gained 24th place, shooting 108.
Playing again on Wednesday afternoon, Westhill defeated Cazenovia 184-201 to improve to 6-4-1 on the season. Meisner finished with a 41, with Bunce contributing a 45.
Marcellus, on that same day, took a 182-210 defeat to CBA, where Colella shot a 46 at Drumlins to trail the Brothers’ duo of Annie Fletcher (43) and Ellie Baumgartner (45), and match Annie Caputo. Mordaunt finished with a 48 and Abbott shot a 52.
While each of these sides got ready for Tuesday’s Section III Tournament at Kanon Valley in Oneida, West Genesee still had some regular-season matches left.
The Wildcats lost, 228-245, to Central Square last Tuesday afternoon at Greenview, with Danielle Schmidt shooting a 56, trailing Redhawks teammates Carissa Rowland and Laura Bratt by two shots. Miki Riley had a 62, with Kaitlin Bivens (63) and Kara Kaufelz (64) close behind.
In boys golf, Westhill saw a possible OHSL Liberty division regular-season title slip away in last Tuesday’s wind-swept match against Sakneateles, who seized first place for good by winning a close 218-220 decision over the Warriors.
Even though Nate Miesner shot a 36 at Camillus Country Club, none of his teammates fared better than Andy Vadnais’ 43, while two Lakers golfers, Jacob Patalino (40) and Nick Parma (42), beat Vadnais, and the depth of Skaneateles won out.
Westhill did rebound Thursday to beat 206-232, also at CCC. Miesner shot a blistering 33, six shots ahead of the Bearcats’ Jon Smolen (39), while Sean Dadey got a 41 and Jacob Van Buren a 43 for the Warriors, ahead of Carter McMahon (44) and David Bleskoski (45). Aiding Smolen on Solvay’s side, Conrad Skrupa shot a 44 and Colby Skrupa finished with a 46.
A day earlier, Solvay lost, 204-244, to Cazenovia. Smolen had a 39 at Cazenovia Country Club, beaten only by the Lakers’ Cody Thorp (37), but five other Cazenovia golfers finished ahead of Joe Sardo’s 48. Colby Skrupa (50), Conrad Skrupa (52) and Chance Todd (55) closely followed.
On that same day, Jordan-Elbridge hosted Skaneateles at Millstone, watching those other Lakers prevail 207-221 to clinch the OHSL Liberty division regular-season title.
Still, the Eagles’ Nick Falcone matched the Lakers’ Jacob Patalino for low individual round, each of them shooting 38. Max Bondgren had a 43, with Cole Melfi (45) beating out Kyle Vanliew (46) and Sean Conroy (49) among individuals.
When J-E took on Marcellus Thursday, it proved close – but the Mustangs won, 228-233, getting a 41 from Carter Austin and a 42 from Frank Szczech in front of Falcone, who had a 43, and Conroy, who finished with a 45.
Yet Marcellus could not topple Westhill Friday afternoon, taking a 225-232 defeat to the Warriors. Miesner’s 40 beat out Austin (41) and Grant Lewis (42), the Mustangs’ top individuals, while Dadey added a 45 and McMahon and Van Buren both shot 46. Nick Sonnachio had a 49 for Marcellus.
