While the excitement in local girls lacrosse is mostly centered around Cicero-North Syracuse (especially after its win at West Genesee), Liverpool is quietly putting together a strong season of its own.
But the Warriors had a chance to make a loud statement of its own Tuesday night when it took on the Northstars in the latest chapter of their local rivalry at LHS Stadium, even if last Friday’s 13-9 defeat to Fayetteville-Manlius halted some of that momentum.
At 5-1 going into last week’s action, Liverpool added to that win total at Central Square last Tuesday, steadily picking up a 14-8 victory over the Redhawks.
Only with a 7-6 halftime lead, the Warriors gained control by, once again, winning the draws and also tightening up its defense, limiting Central Square to just two goals in the second half.
Meanwhile, the attack stayed steady. Julia Sardella (four goals), Kasi Cabrey and Jen Kershner (each with three goals and one assist) finished with the same point total, helped by single goals from Cassidy Hall, Maggie Tassone, Rachel Kline and Megan Fitzpatrick.
It was bound to get tougher Friday night when Liverpool hosted an F-M side that had a 2-4 record, but had just pushed Baldwinsville to overtime before taking a 13-12 defeat earlier in the week.
As it turned out, that great effort by the Hornets would have a long-term effect, for when it arrived at LHS Stadium, it proceeded to play a strong first half, cutting through the Warriors’ defenses and not letting up until it had an 8-5 advantage.
Liverpool would do everything it could to turn the game around in the second half. Sardella would score three times as Cabrey and Tassone got two goals apiece, with Hall and Kline also finding the net.
F-M answered every Warriors surge, though, overcoming Megan Evangelista’s 10 saves by having seven different players score goals, though Jane Cote, with four goals and one assist, and Amanda Cramer, with three goals and two assists, led the way.
This is a big week for Liverpool, who would get a shot at rival Cicero-North Syracuse on Tuesday before games on Thursday against Syracuse and Saturday against Watertown.
