By just two points, the Westhill-Bishop Ludden girls indoor track and field team missed out on claiming the Section III Class B championship Thursday night at SRC Arena.
A late rally by Cazenovia meant that, with 93 points, it edged the Warriors (91 points) and Skaneateles (88 points) for that top spot. Solvay (29 points) beat out Jordan-Elbridge (27 points) for sixth place in the nine-team field.
Twice, Westhill-Ludden won relays. In the 4×800, Kendra MacCaull, Noelle Coolican, Maura McAnaney and Carmella Carr went 10 minutes, 32.82 seconds, holding off Skaneateles (10:32.87) by just 0.05 seconds after two miles of competition.
Then, in the 4×200, a different Warriors quartet prevailed as Tatiana Monds, Jayanna Monds, Isabella Haber and Olivia Dagineau, in a time of 1:53.75, fended off Cazenovia (1:54.34) for that top spot, with Solvay sixth in 2:00.81. In the pole vault, Katherine Doherty won, clearing 9 feet, with Coolican (8’6”) in second place.
Solvay’s Samantha Waters won the shot put, throwing it 30’5” as teammate Belle Nieves (26’8 ½”) was fifth, while the Bearcats’ Katie Harrington rose to second place in the high jump, clearing 5 feet, a leap only Clinton’s Alayna Lofgren (5’1”) could top. Harrington also took second in the triple jump with a best leap of 33’3”, a number only Cazenovia’s Ashley Kent (34’11 ½”) could top.
Tatiana Monds was second (7.58 seconds) to CBA’s Anna Schug (7.34 seconds) in the 55-meter dash, with Monds later taking third place in the long jump with a leap of 15’3”. Genny Corcoran (10:55.97) and Alaina Kenny (11:13.71) were second and third, respectively, in the 3,000-meter run behind Canastota’s Rachel Bargabos (10:43.24).
J-E’s Abby Gugel won the 1,000-meter run in 3:08.27, beating out Westhill-Ludden’s Annibel Coolican (3:12.10) in second place, and didn’t stop there, going to the 1,500-meter run and, in 5:03.48, beating Cazenovia’s Clara Rowles (5:04.68) as Corcoran was third in 5:04.92 and Kenny (5:22.14) sixth.
Coolican went on to the 600-meter run and again finished second, in 1:42.61, just behind Skaneateles’ Julia Willcox, who won in 1:41.79.
The Eagles’ Theresa Dristle (sixth in the 600 in 1:55.12), Julie Hines, Madi Hatt and McKenzie Stevenson finished third in the 4×400 relay in 4:29.64, where Westhill-Ludden (4:35.15) was fifth.
Meanwhile, in the boys sectional Class B meet, Solvay, with 45 points, was just ahead of Westhill-Ludden (42 points) and J-E (39 points) for fourth place, though Skaneateles won with 105 points.
Solvay did best in field events, where Jacob Hook won the shot put, throwing it 45’2” to beat J-E’s Brad Marshall (42’8 ½”) in second place, with Westhill-Ludden’s Donovan Whipple (40’7 ½”) and Jimmy Kernan (40’1 ½”) fifth and sixth, respectively. Then, in the triple jump, Isaiah Lee won with a top leap of 42’1”, beating Kiley and Owen Ryan (40’3”) in fifth place.
The Bearcats’ Dan Hatch cleared 10’6” for third place in the pole vault and Mike Tomoroska (9’6”) was fifth. Garrett Lee was seventh in the high jump but was fifth in the long jump (19’ ¾”), where Isaiah Lee (19’2 ¾”) was fourth.
Tyler Jackson twice gave J-E runner-up finishes, in the 1,000 (2:46.46) and 600 (1:29.39), each time with Cazenovia’s Sean Satchwell in front. Ethan Kinney finished fifth in the 600. Jackson, Kinney, Austin Milton and Zach Rink were second in the 4×800 in 9:05.32, trailing only Skaneateles (9:03.37).
The Eagles also saw Hunter Brunelle finish fourth in the 3,200-meter run. J-E got sixth in the 4×400 relay in 4:17.75, with Westhill-Ludden (3:57.22) in fifth place, just as the Warriors were in the 4×800.
Matt McAnaney nearly won the 55 sprint for Westhill-Ludden, going 7.02 seconds to edge Ryan and finish inches behind Skaneateles’ Tommy Hagen, who won in 7.01 seconds. Alex Kiley had a second-place long jump of 19’7” and finished third (41’2 ½”) in the triple jump.
Xavier Fleurinor was third in the 55 hurdles in 8.49 seconds, with Isaiah Lee fifth, while Chris Coates was fifth in the 300 (38.96 seconds) and Garnet Remillard finished sixth in the mile. Fleurinor, McAnaney, Coates and Kiley were fourth (1:40.60) in the 4×200, where Solvay (1:45.47) was sixth.
A day earlier, in the sectional Class AA championships, West Genesee’s girls team sixth out of 11 teams with 27.16 points, while Marcellus was seventh in the Class A girls meet with 20 points.
WG’s Carly Benson dropped out of the 3,000 during the race, but returned later in the 1,500-meter run and won it, going 4:51.16 to pull away from Fayetteville-Manlius’ Sophia Ryan (4:59.36) and the rest of the field.
Megan Delia finished fourth in the 300 in 43.37 seconds. Maria Matkoski, Valerie Pirro, Lindsay Weaver and Elise Dunshee were fourth (4:19.51) in the 4×400, with Matkoski, Weaver, Dunshee and Madeline Lowry fourth in the 4×800 in 10:20.19. Delia went on to record a fourth-place long jump of 15’8”, while Wildcats teammate J’Nazia Anderson got sixth place (31’11”) in the shot put.
Mary Catherine Coon gave the Mustangs a third-place time of 7.85 seconds in the 55 sprint, just behind Homer’s Alsasce Sanders, who won in 7.74 seconds. Coon later was fourth in the high jump (4’8”) as Haley Randall was sixth (10.30 seconds) in the 55 hurdles.
On the boys side in Class A, Marcellus’ Noah Townsend contended in the high jump, clearing 5’8” and taking second place behind Oswego’s Kyle Crossman, who won by clearing 5’10”.
Pat McGuane finished fourth in the 1,000 in 2:51.59, while Will Coon took sixth in the 55-meter dash. Coon, McGuane, Ethan Mosure and Joe Riccardi were fifth in the 4×800 in 9:38.65.
WG’s Logan McAnulty finished fifth in the boys 600 in 1:28.76, while Jackson Powell was sixth in the 55 hurdles in 9.11 seconds. The boys Wildcats also had Mark Dellfave, Eldon Hard, Russ Graziano and Chris Petosa finish sixth in the 4×400 relay in 3:45.63.
