All season long, the Cicero-North Syracuse indoor track and field teams mostly looked up at Liverpool in the standings during a variety of meets held at SRC Arena.
But when it came time to decide the Section III Class AA championships Wednesday night, the Northstars beat the Warriors in both the girls and boys divisions, earning second-place finishes.
In the girls meet, C-NS had 81 points and Liverpool 75.16 points, each of them behind Fayetteville-Manlius and its winning total of 121.66 points.
Earning 24 points in the high jump alone, C-NS saw Nicole Herringshaw win by clearing 5 feet, while Cassandra Baldwin was second and Brittany House third, each of them topping 4’8”.
House, in 9.29 seconds, held off F-M’s Gwenn Shepardson (9.39 seconds) to win the 55-meter hurdles. Liverpool’s Alexis Bittel (9.72 seconds) was fourth.
Javielle Fanizzi grabbed a victory in the long jump, going 17 feet 9 ¾ inches to beat Auburn’s Shanikah Williams (17’2 ¾”) and the field. Fanizzi also was second (35’8”) to F-M’s Christabel Ezidegwu (36 feet) in the triple jump, where Liverpool’s Alexis Bittel (33’8 ¼”) was fourth, and Fanizzi was fourth in the 55-meter dash in 7.66 seconds.
The two girls teams each won one relay. C-NS won the 4×800, seeing Jilliann Norris, Taylor Parry, Madison Gross and Annia Marullo post a time of 10:07.08 to get to first place as Liverpool’s quartet of Maia Henry, Kristina Moore, Abby McNamara and Morgan Chewning-Kulick was second in 10:12.15.

The boys sectional AA meet resembled the girls meet, with C-NS taking second place by earning 75 points, Liverpool settling for third place with 65 points and, again, F-M (117 points) in the top spot.
Much of that came from field events, and George Reader earned 28 points there. Reader was victorious in the high jump, topping 6 feet, while Zach Kennedy was sixth (5’4”) behind Liverpool’s Nate Guarante (5’6”) in fifth place.
Then Reader managed a second-place long jump of 19’11 ¼”, trailing only RFA’s Brian Slaughter (21’3”) in first place, but then Reader beat the field in the triple jump, going 40’8 ¾” as no other competitor reached the 40-foot mark.
