Over the course of two nights, each of the area’s indoor track and field teams made their way to SRC Arena for the annual John Arcaro Memorial Invitational.
In the girls meet on Thursday, West Genesee, led by freshman Carly Benson, had a strong showing, picking up 34 points for fourth place, trailing only Liverpool (76 points), Fayetteville-Manlius (66 points) and Jamesville-DeWitt (58 points).
Benson, in the 3,000-meter run, beat the field with a time of 10 minutes, 42.99 seconds, with F-M’s Annika Avery second (10:52.36) and Westhill-Bishop Ludden’s Genny Corcoran third in 10:54.25. Benson’s teammate, Kendall Dombroske, was seventh in 11:27.99.
In the 600-meter run, WG’s Megan Delia went 1:41.95, finishing second to F-M’s Olivia Ryan (1:38.95), with Maria Matkoski taking seventh place and Westhill-Ludden’s Annibel Cooilcan 10th.
Moving to the shot put, the Wildcats’ J’Nazia Anderson had a top throw of 30 feet 11 ¼ inches, beating everyone except Nottingham’s Shayna Santarelli-Hansen, who won with 34’8 ¼”.
In the 4×400 relay, Benson, Matkoski, Valerie Pirro and Nicole Paone finished third in 4:21.31, with Westhill-Ludden (4:33.31) in seventh place. The Wildcats’ Sarah Ferranti took sixth in the 1,500-meter run in 5:27.04, with Westhill-Ludden’s Carmelia Carr ninth.
Solvay stepped up in the 4×800 relay, where Katie Harrington, Zoe Francemone, Jordyn Willsey and Mackenzie Lee finished third in 11:21.94, with Marcellus seeing Jamie McClennan, Haley Randall, Brianna Szczech and Crystal Silliman fifth in 11:50.78.
The Bearcats’ Nicole Antonacci was fourth in the long jump, going 15’2 ¾”, and teammate Belle Nieves was eighth in the pole vault. Coolican was sixth in the long jump (4’10”), Westhill-Ludden’s Alex Parsons tied for fifth in the pole vault (7 feet) and Randall was ninth in the 55-meter hurdles.
Jordan-Elbridge’s Abby Gugel contended in the 1,000-meter run, taking second place in 3:04.85 behind East Syracuse-Minoa’s Natalie Marra (3:02.95), with WG’s Lindsay Weaver (3:21.82) sixth, while the Eagles’ Julie Hines was sixth (44.74 seconds) in the 300-meter dash after an eighth-place finish in the long jump.
Going first, the boys meet last Wednesday saw Westhill-Ludden fare best with 18 points, putting them in eighth place, far off Liverpool’s winning total of 90 points. Marcellus earned 12 points to finish 12th overall.
Nearly half of Westhill-Ludden’s points came from the 300 sprint, where Alex Kiley, in 39.04 seconds, made his way to second place, winning his heat and trailing only Corcoran’s Alec Smith (38.24 seconds), who prevailed. Kiley’s teammate, Richie Easterly, was seventh in 39.71 seconds.
Kiley also contended for top honors in the triple jump, putting down a top leap of 39’7”, which put him second behind Henninger’s Yarell Johnson, who won with 39’9 ¾”. Xavier Fleurinor was close behind, finishing fifth with a leap of 38’4 ¾”, as Solvay’s Garrett Lee was ninth.
Also, Easterly, Xavier Fleurinor, Jake Etoll and Donovan Whipple took sixth place in the 4×200 relay in a clocking of 1:41.30. Whipple finished seventh in the shot put, heaving it 38’1”, with Jimmy Kernan (37’9 ¾”) taking ninth place.
Marcellus had a large presence in the high jump, where Noah Townsend tied for the best leap, clearing 5’8”, but doing so with more misses than Liverpool’s Nate Guarente, who prevailed, Townsend’s teammate, Sean Raymond, topped 5’6” and finished fourth.
West Genesee got its lone points from seeing Logan McAnulty finish fifth in the 600 in 1:28.14. The Wildcats also had Jackson Powell finish eighth in the 55 hurdles (9.15 seconds), where Solvay’s Dan Blanchard (9.19 seconds) was 10th.
The Bearcats did a bit better in the pole vault, where Dan Hatch and Sean Tomoroska were sixth and seventh, respectively, each of them clearing 10 feet Marcellus’ Tom Dailey was eight. WG’s Sean Byrnes took ninth (11:12.32) in the 3,200-meter run, where the Mustangs’ Andy Marsh finished 11th.
The Wildcats added a seventh-place finish in the 4×400 relay in 3:56.37, just out of the points, while Solvay took ninth in the 4×800 relay in 9:28.15. Marcellus’ Pat McGuane was eighth in the mile in a time of 4:58.06, with Mike Provvidenti 10th in the long jump.
