Full fields were back on hand for last week’s indoor track and field John Arcaro Invitational at SRC Arena, but the local sides remained strong.
In the girls portion of the Arcaro meet Thursday night, Fayetteville-Manlius, with 66 points, and Jamesville-DeWitt, with 58 points, finished right behind Liverpool, who prevailed with 76 points as East Syracuse Minoa (24 points) grabbed seventh place.
Going 1-2 in the 1,500-meter run, the Hornets saw Sophia Ryan prevail in four minutes, 50.44 seconds, with Samantha Levy (5:01.79) beating out J-D’s Hannah Butler (5:06.88) for the second spot. Then Olivia Ryan won the 600-meter run in 1:38.95 by exactly three seconds over West Genesee’s Megan Delia (1:41.95), with the Red Rams’ Elena Haarer sixth and Rachel Fairbanks eighth.
Annika Avery, in 10:52.36, was second to West Genesee’s Carly Benson (10:42.99) in the 3,000-meter run, with Reilly Madsen sixth in 11:13.21 and J-D’s Samantha Jaffe ninth.
Not only did J-D’s Alexandra Payne, in 9.19 seconds, beat out F-M’s Gwenn Shepardson (9.37 seconds) in the 55-meter hurdles, she teamed with Haarer, Fairbanks Casey Keane to win the 4×400 relay in 4:14.14, with F-M’s quartet of Christy Berge’, Anna Perrotti, Olivia Ryan and Shauna Cheathen second in 4:18.25. The Rams also were fourth in the 4×200 relay in 1:56.90.
But the Hornets did win the 4×800, where two eighth-graders, Susan Bansbach and Ashley Carter, paired with freshman Rebecca Walters and junior Megan Menz to post 10:58.47, well clear of runner-up Cicero-North Syracuse (11:10.17) and the field.
Moving to field events, J-D’s Patrece Martin went 16 feet 5 ¾ inches in the long jump to beat out Auburn’s Shahnika Williams (16’2 ¾”) for the title. Then, in the triple jump, ESM’s Mia Montgomery won, going 34’4” as Martin, going 33’5”, gained second place. ESM also saw Natalie Marra win the 1,000-meter run in a clocking of 3:02.95, where her teammate, Juliette Miller, finished fourth in 3:09.45.
CBA’s Anna Schug continued to roll, winning the 300-meter dash in 41.04 seconds, nearly a full second ahead of Liverpool’s Ore Akinpelu (42.02 seconds). Schug’s teammate, Kiana Ferguson, was seventh in the 55-meter dash in 7.80 seconds, with Lucy Person and Grace O’Connor seventh and ninth, respectively, in the 1,000 behind Marra.
Payne tacked on a fourth-place high jump clearance of 4’10”, with Sara Signorelli fourth (7’6”) in the pole vault. F-M’s Christabel Ezidiegwu also was fifth in the 55 hurdles in 9.57 seconds, while her F-M teammate, Savannah Pidkaminy, was sixth in the shot put with a toss of 28’8”.
F-M also finished second in last Wednesday night’s boys Arcaro meet, with 75 points, trailing only Liverpool’s winning total of 90 points. Jeremy McGrath helped ESM (18 points) edge out Jamesville-DeWitt (16 points) and finish ninth overall.
The Hornets went 1-2 in the 1,000, where Bryce Millar and Kyle Barber ran together and Millar, in two minutes, 35.67 seconds, edged out Barber (2:35.74) at the finish line.
Millar and Barber also helped Jon Abbott and Hamza El Habbal push F-M to a victory in the 4×800 relay in 8:09.40, well clear of runner-up Auburn (8:19.26) and the field. The Hornets added a fifth-place effort in the 4×200 relay (1:41.08) and a sixth-place finish in the 4×400 relay in 3:54.93.
Patrick Perry, in 4:41.58, and Riley Hughes, in 4:42.01, were second and third, respectively, behind Liverpool’s Ben Petrella (4:27.98) in the mile.
In the 3,200-meter run, F-M’s Peter Ryan pulled away to win in 9:20.44, with J-D’s Patrick Dye, in 9:37.46, hanging on for second place as the Hornets’ Adam Hunt (9:45.14) was fourth.
McGrath, posting a time of 8.14 seconds, edged out Baldwinsville’s Evan Donhauser (8.15 seconds) to win the 55 hurdles, where F-M’s Ed Cheathen was fifth (8.82 seconds) and CBA’s Tommy O’Connor was sixth (8.97 seconds).
Then, in the 55 sprint, McGrath made his way to second place in 6.84 seconds, topped only by Nottingham’s Shaheed Bashar-Dickerson, who won in 6.71 seconds.
J-D’s Will Cote had his best effort in the long jump, taking fourth place with a leap of 19’4 ¾” and took fifth place in the 300-meter dash 39.63 seconds. F-M’s Taylor Smach threw the shot put 40’3 ¾” and gained third place, while teammate Parker Noble was fourth in the triple jump, going 38’9 ½” as Conner Florczyk was 10th.
