After a 2-0 start, competition picked up for both of Baldwinsville’s bowling teams – and so did the excitement, even if it was accompanied by a pair of defeats.
That was especially true in last Monday’s match against visiting Auburn at B’ville Sports Bowl, where the boys lost a 2-1 decision that saw near-perfection from the Maroons’ Andrew Kopec and strong series from the Bees’ Tyler Watchus and Nick Fordyce.
It was Kopec providing the highest drama in one of his games, rolling 11 consecutive strikes before leaving a single pin on his 12th and final shot, leaving him with a 299 game that was part of a 650 series.
B’ville lost despite the fact that Watchus and Fordyce both beat Kopec’s three-game total. Watchus had a 672 series, with a high game of 249, and Fordyce was steady in his 661 series, not recording a game better than 231.
Meanwhile, in a quieter girls match, B’ville fell to Auburn, the defending CNY Counties League champions, by a 3-0 margin. Alyson Pfeiffer had a 435 series and 168 high game, with Brooke Flask posting a 160 game in her 418 set and Kaitlynn Adsitt adding a 409 series. Maroons star Kaylee Fallat led her side with a 569 series and high game of 206.
Going to Strike-N-Spare Lanes on Thursday afternoon, B’ville faced Cicero-North Syracuse, where Watchus put up a memorable series in the boys match, yet the Bees still lost, 3-0, to the Northstars.
All that Watchus did was string together an 804 series, tops among all Section III bowlers this winter, which included a 289 high game that had 10 consecutive strikes.
But C-NS had far more depth on its roster, led by Nick Joss, who had shot his own 299 earlier in the week and had a 703 series this time around. Josh Cloute (636 series), Zach Emm (591 series) and Jacob Fox (574 series) offered ample support.
The B’ville girls also dropped a 2-1 decision to C-NS, with Flask posting a 485 series and 179 high game, just ahead of Asditt (474 series, 178 high game) and Pfeiffer, who had a 177 game in her 429 set. Kaitlin Antineli paced the Northstars with her 235 game that led to a 569 series.
Each of B’ville’s teams are in action this week against Syracuse and Central Square.
