It’s rare to see any high school girls swim meet end in a tie, but that’s what Baldwinsville went through during its recent meet against Christian Brothers Academy.
When the Bees’ quartet of Brooke Atkinson, Noelle Staso, Anna DiOrio and Amanda Johnson claimed the final race, the 400 freestyle relay in four minutes, 10.26 seconds it produced a 47-47 deadlock with the Brothers.
B’ville won two of the three relay events. The meet started with Johnson, Staso, Atkinson and Lauren Burchill getting to first place in the 200 medley relay in 2:00.92.
Following that, Staso claimed two events on her own, edging past CBA’s Annie Fletcher by half a second, 2:02.07 to Fletcher’s 2:02.57, in the 200 freestyle. Staso, in 57.80 seconds, and Johnson, in 59.70 seconds, went 1-2 in the 100 freestyle.
Another sweep was attained in the 100 backstroke, where Johnson made her way to first place in 1:06.12 and McKenna Redmore finished second in 1:13.28. Burchill followed with an easy victory in the 100 breaststroke in 1:15.15.
Atkinson, meanwhile, engaged in a close 200 individual medley, finishing in 2:26.86, just behind CBA’s Julia Torell (2:26.04), who also beat Atkinson, 1:03.26 to 1:04.42, in the 100 butterfly. The Brothers went 1-2 in two other events, as Tessa Queri took the 50 freestyle (26.86 seconds) and Annie Fletcher won the 500 freestyle in 5:37.95.
No tie was needed, though, when the Bees went to Skaneateles last Wednesday night and, fueled by double wins from Johnson and Atkinson, defeated the Lakers 97-84.
Improving her time to 2:25.04 in the 200 IM, Atkinson won that event, and then went on to the 100 butterfly, where she posted 1:03.23 for another first-place effort.
As for Johnson, she would cruise through the 100 freestyle in 1:00.62 before going to the 100 backstroke and, in 1:05.44, lower her winning time from the CBA meet by nearly a second.
Staso would go to the 500 freestyle and win that race in 5:32.69, just before Burchill claimed the 100 breaststroke in 1:13.76, more than a second quicker than her effort against CBA.
Though B’ville won just one of the three relay events, it remained consistent as Johnson, Atkinson, Staso and Burchill went 2:01.98 in the 200 medley relay.
All that was left for the Bees now was to host Cicero-North Syracuse in next Wednesday’s regular-season finale before it turned its attention to the Section III championships in early November.
