With two weeks to go before the Section III Class A championship meet at Vernon-Verona-Sherrill, each of Baldwinsville’s cross country teams wanted to build up some momentum.
And the Bees did so by winning in both the boys and girls Varsity 1 races during Saturday’s rain-soaked Chittenango Invitational at Jamesville Beach Park.
For the B’ville girls, it meant having to prevail in a head-to-head battle with Cicero-North Syracuse. Posting 39 points, the Bees held off the Northstars (53 points) and five other teams in that Varsity 1 division.
Maizy Ludden, in a time of 20 minutes, 6.2 seconds, made her way to fourth place, while Elizabeth Fawwaz got to fifth place in 20:14.3, each of them ahead of C-NS’s top runner, Jilliann Norris, who was sixth in 21:05.6.
Kelley Hull made her way to 10th place, in 21:19.1, in between the Northstars’ Taylor Parry in eighth place (21:12.1) and Annina Marullo (21:20.2) in the 12th spot.
And While Megan Trubia (21:37.2) and Madison Gross (21:38.9) also ran well for C-NS, finishing 15th and 16th, respectively, Claire McMahon made her way to 20th place in 22:11 flat and Mia Bolton (22:20.2) was 21st, clinching the win for B’ville, who also saw Emily McComb get 26th place in 22:32.7 and Nadine Dickter (22:42.6) finish 27th.
Meanwhile, in the boys Varsity 1 race at Jamesville Beach, B’ville prevailed by a bigger margin over C-NS, earning 46 points to the Northstars’ 80 as Fulton (83 points) finished third.
Arden Kellner led the way for the Bees, taking seventh place in 17:48.9, less than a minute behind Hannibal’s Jason McFarland, who won in 16:51.5.
Right behind Kellner, Austin Bolton, in 17:51 flat, rose to eighth place, while Cameron Morrissey finished ninth in 17:53.3. In the next B’ville group, Andrew Olds gained 13th place, in 18:01.8, with Michael Boyce earning 14th place in 18:05.9 and Joey Frink (18:08.5) running to 15th place. Dennis Keegan finished 17th in 18:12.0.
