A busy weekend of activity – some of it frustrating, some of it not as much – helped the Baldwinsville softball team shake off a long, weather-enforced rest.
And it culminated last Saturday afternoon, when the Bees took on Fayetteville-Manlius and, for the most part, relied on its bats to defeat the Hornets 11-8.
F-M took a 3-0 lead in the second inning, only to see B’ville bat around in the top of the third and bring home six runs to move in front for good. A run in the fourth, plus two runs in the fifth and sixth innings, all were needed as the Hornets kept on making comeback attempts.
Madeline Taft led the attack, going three-for-four, including at triple, and earning three RBIs. Mackenzie Carhart, Karley Gutchess, Melissa Mitchell and Keeanna Wolcik also drove in runs, with Serena Capsell, Kyra Hunsinger and Elizabeth Johns earning two hits apiece.
And this followed a Friday double-header against West Genesee where the Bees did not score a single run in 1-0 and 2-0 decisions. In the second of those two games, Emma Bernet took the loss as the Wildcats’ Morgan Nichols hit a solo home run and also pitched, holding B’ville to four hits, two of them from Gutchess.
Six of the remaining 10 games in the Bees’ regular-season schedule could take place this week, as B’ville (6-4) is set to face Oswego, Central Square, Auburn and Syracuse West before a rematch with Auburn Saturday that’s part of a doubleheader with a game against Liverpool.
