Though the Cazenovia wrestling program’s first Section III title in 47 years just eluded the grasp of Cazenovia’s Brad Lucas, his superb season led to one last reward.
Lucas was named as an alternate for this weekend’s New York State Public High School Athletic Association championship meet at Albany’s Times Union Center in the 285-pound division, and could enter the tournament if another wrestler drops out.
Overall in the 2013-14 season, Lucas went 37-4, winning titles in the OHSL Liberty/Patriot meet at Port Byron and Section III Class C tournament at General Brown before reaching the sectional Division II finals, where he lost a 2-1 overtime decision to Oneida’s Tyler Havener at Onondaga Community College’s SRC Arena.
Also, Lucas did quite well in tournaments, going 5-0 at the Morrisville-Eaton Duals, 7-0 in the Brett Dixon Memorial Duals at Central Square and claiming the 285-pound title at the Port Byron Invitational.
One irony of Lucas being an at-large selection was that Canastota’s Jacob Morris, whom Lucas beat, 3-2, in the sectional Class C meet, did make it as a wild card into the main bracket. Morris went 36-5 this season.
Action at the state meet in Albany starts Friday morning at 10 a.m., with opening-round and quarterfinal bouts. The semifinals are Saturday morning, followed by the championship bouts that night at 6:30.
