Churning toward an undefeated regular season, the Liverpool boys swim team isn’t letting anything get in the way – especially possible fatigue.
Though the Warriors, when facing Baldwinsville last Wednesday night, were in the midst of a stretch of four meets in 10 days, it didn’t matter one bit as it breezed past the Bees 98-78.
Garrett Clarke won just one individual event, but it was special as he tore through the 200 individual medley in two minutes, 1.56 seconds, one of Section III’s best times of the winter.
Troy Miller did win twice, though. Miller held off Dan Griffin, 23.84 seconds to 24.16, in the 50 freestyle, and also prevailed in the 100 backstroke in 1:00.73 after helping Nick Burdo, Connor Thiel and Trevor Case win the 200 medley relay in 1:48.97.
Dan Roche had one of his best diving efforts of the season, picking up 324.3 points, with Joe Whaley (222.5 points) and Nick Matthews (220.35 points) second and third, respectively.
Burdo was quick in the 100 butterfly, winning in 52.90 seconds as Clarke (57.14 seconds) finished second. Marc Alessi, in 2:02.74, was victorious in the 200 freestyle, while Liam Henry roared to first in the 100 freestyle in 51.89 seconds. Matt Petit went 5:23.32 in the 500 freestyle as Aaron Johnson beat the field in the 100 breaststroke in 1:12.24.
Back in action again Friday night, Liverpool took on Fayetteville-Manlius, and it followed much the same pattern as the Warriors cruised to a 94-75 victory over the Hornets.
Alessi would win twice, swimming the 200 freestyle in 2:03.36 and going to the 100 backstroke and blazing through it in 58.74 seconds. He also teamed with Clarke, Henry and Trevor Thompson to win the 200 medley relay in 1:48.71.
On his own, Clarke was first in the 200 IM in 2:03.02, just before Henry won the 50 freestyle in 23.07 seconds. Roche dipped to 309.25 points in diving, but still finished first as Luke Rogers needed 1:03.87 to prevail in the 100 butterfly. Petit won the 100 freestyle in 51.18 seconds as James Hunter, in the 500 freestyle, prevailed in 5:47.30.
Cicero-North Syracuse, in its “home” pool at Le Moyne College, met long-time power West Genesee back on Wednesday and, despite some modest success, lost 95-89 to the Wildcats.
In fact, the Northstars won the opening event, the 200 medley relay, where Scott Cooley, Jacob Mekker, Nate Ancona and Steve Cooley finished in a time of 1:53.85.
Nate Ancona went on to claim the 200 IM in 2:25.80, just ahead of WG’s Colin Riley (2:27.68), with Zach Dengos third in 2:30.50. Mekker was second in the 100 backstroke in 1:07.79, with Cooley second (1:12.37) and Dengos third (1:13.21) in the 100 breaststroke.
Mekker returned to help Dan Eager, James Dwyer and Rich Sprancmanis as C-NS got first place in the 400 freestyle relay in 4:04.81. WG had a trio of double winners as Collin Zapisek (50 freestyle, 100 freestyle), Matt O’Donnell (100 butterfly, 100 backstroke) and Mike Gilheney (200 freestyle, 500 freestyle) went to the forefront.
