Collin Zapisek, Matt O’Donnell and Mike Gilheney made sure that the West Genesee boys swim team did not tumble back to the .500 mark.
Going up against Cicero-North Syracuse Wednesday night at the Le Moyne College pool, this Wildcats trio each won a pair of events, earning valuable points as WG went on to defeat the Northstars 95-89.
In the 100 freestyle, Zapisek went under 50 seconds, winning in 49.93 seconds, and this followed a 50 freestyle where he took first place in 23.42 seconds. He also teamed with Jarrod Scutari, Nate Gdula and Evan Tuthill to go 1:40.30 in the 200 freestyle relay.
Meanwhile, O’Donnell roared to victory in the 100 butterfly in 57.52 seconds and moved on to the 100 backstroke, where in 1:02.49 he beat C-NS’s Jacob Mekker (1:07.69) by more than five seconds.
Gilheney emerged in the 200 freestyle, where he held off teammate Sean Hagadorn, 2:04.86 to Hagadorn’s 2:05.82, and he would go on to take first place in the 500 freestyle, too, rolling to a time of 6:01.74.
For his part, Hagadorn was victorious in the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.58, comfortably ahead of the Northstars’ Zack Cooley (1:12.27). Peter Bowman was first in diving as Colin Riley, in the 200 individual medley, was second (2:27.68) to C-NS’s Nate Ancona, who won in 2:25.80.
Now WG heads home for two weeks, first meeting Oswego next Wednesday before its Jan. 29 showdown with first-place Liverpool.
