The Cazenovia girls basketball team had gone nearly three weeks without game action since its surprising win at Cortland on Dec. 20. Cold weather postponed last Tuesday’s game with Jordan-Elbridge after snow pushed a Jan. 2 trip to Oswego until later in the month.
So when the Lakers faced Hannibal on Thursday, it ended a 20-day layoff, and perhaps that rust showed at times as the Warriors beat them by a 52-36 margin.
Led by Devin Sorrell’s hot 3-point shooting (she made six of them), Hannibal used a 21-9 dash through the second quarter to take control after the Lakers led 13-9 in the opening period. Despite 11 points from Danielle Tedesco and 10 points apiece from Maggie Johnson and Kelsi Fredericks, the Lakers were unable to recover from that Warrior burst as Sorrell would finish with 26 points.
The girls would make up the J-E game Friday, just down the road at Cazenovia College’s gymnasium since Buckley Gym was getting set up for the wrestling Cazenovia Invitational, and the Lakers bounced back to beat the Eagles 47-24.
Despite some early offensive struggles, Cazenovia got away with it because the Eagles were shut out in the first quarter. After they played on even terms in the game’s middle stages, the Lakers got away by outscoring J-E 19-5 in the fourth quarter.
Inside, Johnson produced 15 points, while Audrey Burbidge worked from the perimeter and hit three 3-pointers on her way to 12 points overall. Tedesco added seven points.
Now a big week awaits the Lakers (3-5), with games against Westhill and Fulton, plus a trip to Onondaga Community College’s Allyn Hall Sunday to face Bishop Grimes in the Pathfinder Zebra Classic, with the girls tipping off at 3:30 and the boys against the Cobras at 5 p.m.
