Each of the Liverpool and Cicero-North Syracuse indoor track and field teams would earn runner-up finishes during Monday’s Oscar B. Jensen Holiday Relays at SRC Arena – but neither of them could prevent Fayetteville-Manlius from a sweep.
In the boys meet, it was a closer call. Liverpool gained 58.5 points and C-NS earned 50 points, but that left them second and third, respectively, behind F-M’s top total of 69 points.
Still, the Warriors and Northstars won plenty. Ryheim Lawes, with his winning time of 37.26 seconds in the 300-meter dash, produced a first-place finish as he and Mark Vanmarter went 1:15.99 to hold off C-NS’s Pete Girardi and Nate Hilt (1:16.10) by just 0.11 seconds.
Then Lawes went to the 55-meter dash and prevailed there, too, in 6.59 seconds, as he and Brandon Mayfield won that race in 13.67 seconds) to hold off Fowler (13.84) in the second spot. In the long jump, Lawes went 19’7 ½” to get second place behind Fowler’s Delee Williams (20’ ¼”) as Lawes and Mayfield took second (37’5 ¾”), just behind Jamesville-DeWitt (37’7 ½”) from the team side.
They would split honors in the shot put, with Liverpool’s Geoffrey Bell winning the individual event with a throw of 49 feet 4 inches, but the Warriors second to C-NS as Joe Castaldo, second (49 feet), and Nick Golembieski (39’1”) had a combined 88’1”, with Bell and Anderson LeClair (81’7”) sliding into second place.
Alex Christensen and Connor Buck combined for second place in the mile relay in 9:10.12, beaten only by F-M’s 9:00.95. Dylan McCarthy and Nick LeClair were second and fourth, respectively, in the 3,200-meter run, where in 20:05.39 they were again second to F-M’s 19:57.84. C-NS was seventh. Nate Guarente tied for fifth in the high jump.
Christensen was seventh among individuals in the 600-meter run in 1:27.79 to B’ville’s Josh Perez (1:26.65) as he teamed with Collin Gwilt to finish fourth in 3:03.64, just ahead of the Northstars’ Nate Hilt and Matt Williams (3:05.92) in fifth place.
C-NS dominated in the 55-meter hurdles, where Morgan Austen (8.07 seconds) and Girardi (8.23 seconds) went 1-2 among individuals and, in 16.30 seconds, the Northstars blew away the field.
Building on that, Austen, third in the individual triple jump with 38’11”, joined Girardi again in that event as they went 76’5 ¼”, well clear of runner-up F-M (73’5 ¾”) as Vanmarter and Dilraj Sekhon got fifth place (72’4”) for the Warriors.
Paul DeGennaro and Evan Russell were third in the 1,000-meter run in 5:40.60, where Liverpool settled for sixth place. Connor Osborne cleared 11 feet in the pole vault and tied for fourth.
On the girls side, it was C-NS finishing second, earning 47 points, again with F-M in first place and again with the Hornets earning 69 points to get there. Liverpool had 32 points for fourth place.
Javielle Fanizzi, fourth among individuals, and Brittany House (seventh) pushed C-NS to the top in the 55 hurdles, holding off F-M, 19.49 seconds to 19.66, as Leah Dixon and Destinee Luciano earned fifth place (20.98 seconds) for Liverpool.
Elsewhere, Fanizzi and Hannah Szumolz won the triple jump, Fanizzi taking third and Szumloz fifth place among individuals as their combined leaps of 64’3” held off Jamesville-DeWitt (64’2 ½”) by just half an inch.
Adding to that point total, House and Szumloz were second in the long jump with two leaps adding up to exactly 29 feet, behind Mexico’s winning 31’ ¾”. Fanizzi and Kaitlyn Anderson tied for third (16.16 seconds) with Skaneateles in the 55 sprint, where Mexico won in 15.85 seconds.
Destiny Monica got to second in the shot put, heaving it 33’5 ½”, as she and Shanon Hanmer were second (63’7 ½”) to Nottingham (65’ ½”) on the team side. Liverpool’s Nelliah Watkins and JeNiece Gallisaw were third in 59’2 ½”.
Taylor Parry was third in the individual 1,000 in 3:15.56 as she and Amanda Shuman got fifth on the team side in 6:43.53. Rachel Knight and Amy Kozlowski were sixth in the high jump, clearing 8’8” between them.
Ore Akinpelu stood out for the Warriors, winning the individual 300 sprint in 41.37 seconds, nearly a full second ahead of the field, as she and Erin Straub were third (1:29.77) on the team side, inches behind CBA (1:29.46) and F-M (1:29.63) in that tight event.
Morgan Mahoney was second (10:54.31) to F-M’s Jenna Farrell (10:39.54) in the 3,200, but she and Abby McNamara (fifth) won the team event in 22:05.31, with C-NS’s Megan Trubia and Annina Marullo fifth in 23:34.38. Mahoney and Morgan Chewning-Kulick gave Liverpool a fourth-place finish in the mile relay in 11:16.05, with Maia Henry and Christina Moore fourth (3:41.39) in the 600, ahead of C-NS (3:42.36) in sixth place.
