Holiday rest and respite was not on the agenda for Fayetteville-Manlius, as both of its indoor track and field teams were all too glad to grab another honor before 2013 ended.
The Hornets swept both the girls and boys portions of Monday’s Oscar Jensen Holiday Relays at SRC Arena, while Jamesville-DeWitt, East Syracuse-Minoa and CBA also managed varying degrees of success, too.
F-M’s girls managed to earn 69 points to go the top – the exact same total as the boys. The difference was that the girls won by a comfortable margin over runner-up Cicero-North Syracuse (47 points), while the boys prevailed by half that margin over Liverpool, who ended up with 58.5 points.
What also was different was that F-M won just one event, but piled up points by doing well everywhere, something that J-D, who was fifth with 30.7 points, couldn’t quite match, either.
Annika Avery, in a time of 5:04.38, and Alana Pearl (5:15.84) went 1-2 in the girls mile for an easy victory there in a combined 10:22.22, with Skaneateles (11:00.36) in second place. Sophia Ryan got to second in the 600-meter run in 1:46.82, with Ryan and Samantha Levy second (3:39.52) to West Genesee’s top time of 3:33.22.
Jenna Farrell won the individual 3,000-meter run in 10:39.54, teaming with Reilly Madsen to get second place (22:12.90) behind Liverpool (22:05.31). J-D’s Emilee Carpenter and Samantha Jaffe were third, in 22:57.21, with ESM’s Gabby Pallotta and Brittany Kubecka fourth in 23:25.61.
Christobel Edziegwu won the individual triple jump with a top leap of 35 feet 3 ¼ inches, just ahead of J-D’s Patrece Martin, who was second with 34’9 ½”. Team-wise, though, J-D, with Martin and Mackenzie Maxam, got second place in 64’2 ½”, half an inch behind C-NS (64’3”), while F-M’s pair of Edziegwu and Carolina Colon finished third with 62’4 ½”.
Edziegwu was third among individuals in the 55-meter hurdles in 9.51 seconds as she and Anna Castro were second (19.66 seconds) to C-NS (19.49 seconds) on the team side, with J-D’s Patrece Martin and Manpreet Singh (20.81 seconds) in fourth. The Hornets also saw Chantal Brennan and Nicole Amico get second (15.97 seconds) to Mexico (15.85 seconds) in the 55-meter dash.
Meanwhile, in the 300-meter dash, F-M’s duo of Natalie Zazzara and Olivia Ryan were second, in 1:29.63, barely behind CBA, who saw Anna Schug, third among individuals in 43.10 seconds, and Hailey Dobbins win in 1:29.46. Castro and Shannie Nesher tied for fourth in the high jump, and paired with Megan Josephson to finish fourth in the long jump.
J-D managed to top F-M in the 1,000-meter run, with Emilee Carpenter second among individuals in 3:14.59 as she and Laura Wengert (3:19.36) finished second in 6:33.95, with F-M’s Jessica Howe and Megan Menz third in 6:35.77. Also for the Red Rams, Tangela Hightower and Salwa El Hindi were fourth in the shot put, with throws adding up to 58’1 ¼”.
ESM’s Nina Zesky won the individual high jump, clearing 5’4”, while Alexis Bennik cleared 7’6” for fourth in the pole vault, with Mia Montgomery third in the long jump as she went 15’ ½” and, with Savanna Taylor, finished sixth.
Meanwhile, in the boys Jensen Relays, F-M not only had to contend with Liverpool, but also J-D, who roared to fourth place with 44 points as ESM (12 points) tied for eighth.
J-D’s Zach Liebmann won the pole vault, clearing 14 feet, and joining Rob Murphy for a team title clearing 23’6” between them, leaving F-M’s Justin Jones (11’3”) tying for second place.
Not stopping there, Liebmann and Will Cote won the long jump, too, going 37’7 ½” between them as ESM’s duo of Tom Grayer and Jeremy McGrath were second, going 37’5 ¾”, just 1 ¾ inches behind. Cote also won the individual triple jump, going 39’8”as he and Matt Salbert were third (73’4 ¼”) on the team side.
Together, Liebmann and Cote teamed to finish fourth in the 55 sprint, where the Hornets’ Luke Parker and Jordan Noble were fifth. Murphy cleared 5’8” in the high jump to tie for second.
Again, the Hornets featured its distance runners. Bryce Millar and Andrew Berge’ went 9:00.95 to win the mile and 1-2 on the individual side, Millar prevailing in 4:30.35, inches ahead of Berge’ (4:30.60), as ESM’s Jesse Perrone and Jared Henry got to fifth place.
Millar also helped in the 400 sprint, where he and Kyle Barber prevailed in 2:58.97 as Jordan-Elbridge (3:01.95) was second. In the 3,200, Peter Ryan won in 9:45.44 as he and Adam Hunt took team honors in 19:57.84, with J-D’s Patrick Dye and Isaac Tupper fourth (20:48.96).
Jon Abbott and Patrick Perry were second (5:40.13) to West Genesee (5:32.75) in the 1,000. Ed Cheatham and Kyle Harbour were second in the 55 hurdles (18.18 seconds) to C-NS (16.30 seconds), with J-D’s Rob Murphy third among individuals in 8.62 seconds) and fourth on the team side with Austin Philleo.
Parker Noble and Justin Jones gave F-M its best finish in a field event, their leaps of 73’7 ¾” adding to second place behind C-NS (76’5 ¼”) in the triple jump. Cheatham and Kyle Barber were fourth in the 300 sprint, with Taylor Smach and Kyle Bronson fifth in the shot put, their throws adding up to 74’8 ½”.
