Three different Baldwinsville wrestlers emerged as champions in their respective weight classes during Saturday’s Phoenix Round Robin Tournament.
And it helped the Bees earn 139 points, which put them in second place among an 11-team field, just ahead of Liverpool (129.5 points) in third place. Mattituck, from Long Island, won with 155 points.
Chad McArdell, who won at 152 pounds, shared Most Outstanding Wrestler honors with Fayetteville-Manlius’ Paddy Quinlan. McArdell, in his four round-robin matches, earned four pins, none of them taking longer than 91 seconds, including a 34-second fall over Port Byron’s Zach Kurtz, before he pinned Liverpool’s Darren Breen in 3:04 in the title match.
Meanwhile, Connor Ross took top honors at 145 pounds, getting two pins and two decisions where he allowed just one point in his early-round contests before going to the finals, where he took just 2:24 to pin Mattituck’s James Hoeg.
And Joe Nasoni brought home the first-place medal at 195 pounds. None of his three bouts in the early rounds went past 54 seconds (including a 15-second fall over Mattituck’s Frank Sierra), and in the title match Nasoni went a bit longer – 1:22, to be exact – but still pinned North Rose-Wolcott’s Skyler Tuper.
In order to his MOW honors, Quinlan had to win his 138-pound final over Kevin Paul, a 5-4 match that proved closer than the 8-4 decision Quinlan claimed when they wrestled earlier in the week. Steve Petrelli got to the 160-pound final, but lost to Christian Angelson (Mattituck) 8-3.
David Rush was third in his round-robin bracket at 126 pounds, going 2-2, with Devon Buyck going 2-2 at 170 pounds. Josh Peck earned a pair of wins at 113 pounds, as did Jeremy Pond at 120 pounds.
B’ville wrestles again Friday and Saturday in the Mountain Duals at Dolgeville, and then rest for two weeks before resuming action Jan. 11 in the Eastern States Classic at Sullivan County Community College in Sheldrake.
