It took just one meet for the Skaneateles girls indoor track and field team to make a major impact as a new season got underway.
The Lakers picked up 43 points during Tuesday night’s Jack Morse Holiday Relays at Colgate University’s Sanford Field House, beating most of the 20-team field and only trailing powers Cicero-North Syracuse and Fayetteville-Manlius, who tied for the top spot with 50 points.
Four different times, Skaneateles gained runner-up finishes. During the distance medley relay, the Lakers’ quartet of Kaitlyn Neal, Madeline Adams, Julia Willcox and Aubreah Lynn posted a time of 13 minutes, 7.81 seconds, earning them second place, just 2.39 seconds behind West Genesee’s winning mark of 13:05.42.
It also included the 1,600 sprint medley, where Olivia Gage, Keely Gregg, Katelyn Ellison and Liz Dwyer got a time of 4:36.78, faster than anyone except Baldwinsivlle, who won in 4:34.17, just 2.61 seconds better.
Amanda Wetmore nearly won the individual 55-meter dash, as she finished in 7.78 seconds, trailing only Fowler’s Nytasia Survia (7.61 seconds) as Wetmore and Nicole Bonocore got second in the team event in 15.99 seconds, just behind F-M (15.83 seconds).
As if that wasn’t enough, Wetmore, Bonocore, Ellison and Olivia Gage paired up in the 4×200 relay, where Skaneateles, in a time of 1:55.93, again was second, this time to Mexico, who prevailed in 1:54.58.
Lynn, pairing with Willcox, got to third place in the high jump, the pair clearing 8 feet 8 inches between them as Baldwinsville (9’4″) and F-M (9′) went 1-2. Gregg and Grace Delasin cleared a combined 13 feet in the pole vault to tie for third. Finan Malcolm, Jenn DeRosa, Jillian Van Leer and Maria Schillace gained the Lakers a point when they finished sixth in the 4×800 relay in 11:23.08.
Natalie Roche and Alana Navaroli teamed up to take eighth place in the triple jump with combined leaps of 54’10”.Bonocore and Alex Clark were eighth (22.10 seconds) in the 55-meter hurdles relay. Skaneateles also finished 13th in the 4×400 relay in 4:55.84 as Navaroli, Sophie Hearn, Natalie Roche and Kristina Koslowski ran in that event.
The boys indoor track Lakers returned to action a night later, at SRC Arena, for the John Arcaro Memorial Invitational, where it picked up three points.
Skaneateles had its best finish in the 4×200 relay, where Patrick Biver, Nick Smolenski, Griffin Lawson and Connor Hill gained fifth place in a time of 1:41.40. Smolenski and Lawson joined Cooper Watt and Jacob Blewett to earn sixth place in the 4×400 in 3:52.21.
Individually, Hill had a strong showing in the 55-meter dash, getting to eighth place in 7.01 seconds. Sepp Martin threw the shot put 38’10 3/4″ for 10th place as Andrew Weiss was 17th in the long jump with a top leap of 16’8″.
