Two of the area’s top boys swimming powers got together as CBA/Jamesville-DeWitt paid host to West Genesee last Tuesday night – but only one of them remained powerful.
The CBA/J-D side proved too much, defeating the Wildcats 97-78 and sending them to a rare 0-2 start, as WG had also lost its opening meet to Mexico on Dec. 5.
Kevin Potocki’s big meet kicked off when he teamed with Nick Street, Connor Evans and Dan McGann to help CBA/J-D win the 200 medley relay in 1:50.97, with a second side finishing in 1:55.34.
Then Potocki went to the 200 individual medley and won there, too, posting a time of 2:07.68 to leave Jack Martin (2:24.28) far behind as Potocki also claimed the 100 butterfly in 56.76 seconds.
Casey Sawyer also won a pair of individual races, both of them sprints. In the 50 freestyle, he edged WG’s Nathan Glula, 24.58 seconds to Glula’s 24.85, and went on to take the 100 freestyle, too, covering that distance in 53.22 seconds, more than two seconds ahead of WG’s Sean Hagadorn.
Elsewhere, Alex Dieroff impressed with 237.45 points on the diving board as Matt Wanamaker, with a solid total of 208.5 points, finished second. Martin won the 100 backstroke in 1:02.19 as Spencer Sutherland, Jeff Gabriel, McMillen Judge and Corey Knapp finished in 1:42.33.
Then CBA/J-D made it 2-0 when it returned to its home pool and, against Auburn, got more big efforts from Potocki and Knapp as it earned a 101-77 victory over the Maroons.
Knapp tore to first place in the 200 freestyle in 1:50.41, with Justin McGann second (2:01.23), and then was quick in the 100 freestyle, too, finishing in 50.31 seconds as Sawyer (52.46 seconds) took runner-up honors.
Not only that, but Knapp, Potocki, Sawyer and Josh Lacey teamed to win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:32.74, beating out a good effort from Auburn (1:34.59) to prevail.
By himself, Potocki also won twice, improving his time in the 200 IM to 2:07.07 to beat Auburn’s Nick Radell (2:11.60), and then going through the 100 butterfly in 55.95 seconds to make sure the Maroons’ Nick Lupo (57.16 seconds) didn’t catch him.
Lacey proved spectacular in the 500 freestyle, tearing to first place in a Section III season-best 4:49.47. Dieroff, in another diving victory, moved his total to 239.05 points, while Wanamaker had 199.5 points.
Sargon Bebla (1:09.22) edged Connor Evans (1:11.61) in the 100 breaststroke as Potocki, Bebla, Martin and Ben Katsarsky claimed the 200 medley relay in 1:50.20. Sawyer was second (24.04 seconds) to Auburn’s Collin Mitchell (22.73 seconds) in the 50 freestyle, with Street the runner-up in the 100 backstroke (1:03.45) behind the Maroons’ Jacob Whiting (59.74 seconds).
