Recent years have seen the Cazenovia girls indoor track and field team dominate the opposition at the various Mohawk Valley Indoor Track Association meets contested at Colgate Unviersity’s Sanford Field House during the winter.
That started to happen again last Friday night, when the Lakers earned 96 points to fend off Clinton (78 points) and New Hartford (70 points) to win the first MVITA gathering of 2013-14.
Even the graduation of sprint star Ashley Winn hasn’t slowed Cazenovia down. Ashley Kent is still around, and she was a big factor in this meet, starting with her 55-meter hurdles victory in 9.68 seconds as she and Delaney Yates won with a combined 20.84 seconds.
Cazenovia also won the 4×800 relay as Jeanette Cudney, Maureen Milmoe, Grace Milmoe and Colleen Stalder posted a time of 10:36.30, well clear of runner-up New Hartford (11:09.96) and the field. Chittenango was sixth in 12:30.79.
Not stopping there, Cudney won the 1,500-meter run in 5:14.40 as she, along with Megan Henderson (second), Mya Walters (fifth) and Meredith Shephard (seventh) claimed the combined race in 22:12.36 for 10 more points.
The Lakers also cleaned up in field events. Hannah Dain and Sarah Haley, second and third among individuals behind West Canada’s Jillian Jones (25 feet 1 inch), combined for a victory in the shot put with throws adding up to 49’ 8 ½”. Dain and Haley also got third (46’11 ½”) in the weight throw.
Kent and Ashley Pittman were second (28’3”) to Central Valley Academy (30’4”) in the long jump relay, with that same pair also getting the runner-up spot in the triple jump, going 63’5 ½” between them as Clinton (65’7 ½”) prevailed. Chittenango was sixth in 51’5”.
In the 4×200 relay, Olivia McEntee, Isabella Quattrone, Julia Raleigh and Jessie Matt were second, in 1:57.63, just behind Oriskany, who won in 1:56.35. Jessica Macheda, teaming with Tori Fischer, were third in the high jump, clearing a combined 8’10”. Fischer and Pittman were second (15 feet) to Clinton (16 feet) in the pole vault.
McEntee and Macheda were third (16.52 seconds) in the 55-meter dash as Quattrone, Hannah Light-Olson, Keeley Race and Delaney Yates were third (4:55.20) in the 1,600 sprint medley relay, where Chittenango (5:14.59) finished fifth.
Moving to the boys MVITA meet, Chittenango did better, the Bears picking up 38 points for fourth place, with Cazenovia in third place as it got 49 points. Each of them was far behind Clinton’s winning total of 99 points.
The Lakers were victorious in the 4×200 relay, where Alex Devine, Casey Fenton, Will Fellows and Ryan O’Herien posted 1:41.22, well clear of second-place New Hartford (1:45.04) and the field.
Devine and Kevin Porter also were second in the 55-meter dash in 14.66 seconds, half a second behind West Canada (14.16 seconds). Fellows, O’Herien, Devine and Sean Satchwell got third place in the sprint medley in 4:03.43, just ahead of Chittenango (4:14.88) in fourth place.
The Bears won the mile relay, where Mike Capeling, Isaac Czarnecki, Ben Seale and Will Blanding combined for times of 21:13.40, with Clinton (21:27.29) far back in second place. Capeling, Blanding, Czarnecki and Kenny Galbraith, got to third place in the 4×800 in 9:23.09.
Martin Boyd won the individual high jump for the Bears, clearing 5’4”, and by himself he got third in the team standings, where Cazenovia was fourth thanks to Teo Lang’s 5-foot jump. Dan Mosak and Dylan Hall gave Chittenango a third-place finish in the shot put, with throws of 66’10 ½” as Cazenovia’s Sawyer Hunt and Will Kmetz (63’2 ¼”) were fourth.
O’Herien got second in the weight throw with 32’7 ½”, combining with Hunt for third (57’7 ¾”) on the team side as Chittenango (52’5 ¼”) gained fifth place.
