A tradition of excellence continued for the Jamesville-DeWitt/F-M girls gymnastics team as it rolled to a 10th Section III championship in 11 years during Friday’s sectional meet at the CNY Gym Centre at Shoppingtown Mall.
Head coach Tracey Fishkin’s J-D/F-M squad also qualified four of its gymnasts – Taylor Riley, Taylor Fishkin, Payton Riley and Sanya Glabuer – for the New York State Public High School Athletic Association meet, which will take place March 1 at SUNY-Brockport. Section III is the defending team champion in that event.
In that team competition, J-D/F-M picked up 178.475 points to earn the title in the Large School division, plus the overall crown over Small School champion Whitesboro, who finished with 175.775 points. Central Square, with 158.50 points, finished as the Large School runner-up as East Syracuse-Minoa gained 145.3 points.
Moving to individual all-around competition, Taylor Riley made her way to third place with 37.175 points to earn her state meet berth, behind Whitesboro’s McKenna Passalacqua, who won with 38.575 points, and New Hartford’s Jensen Todd (38.325 points) in second place. Glauber had 36.4 points for fifth place, with Fishkin (35.525 points) earning sixth place.
Taylor Riley tied Todd for the top spot in the uneven bars, each of them scoring 9.625 as Payton Riley, with a 9.275, finished fourth and Glauber (9.0) tied for sixth. Glauber’s best finish came on the balance beam, where her 9.375 secured a state meet berth on that apparatus.
Aside from scoring 9.275 on the beam, where Fishkin had a 9.175 routine, Taylor Riley gained a 9.025 on the vault to edge out teammates Fishkin (9.0), Glauber (8.6) and Payton Riley (8.75). On floor exercise, it was Glauber tying for third place with 9.425, with Fishkin and Taylor Riley both scoring 9.25 as Anyi Liebler-Bendix had a 9.05 routine.
Among ESM gymnasts, Nina Zesky had the best showing, with 31.8 all-around points. She scored 8.4 on the floor behind teammate Lindsay Moon (8.6), adding a 7.95 on the vault, 7.85 on the beam and 7.6 on uneven bars. The Spartans’ Alyssa Penizotto scored 8.0 on the vault.
Amy Fox had 30.85 all-around points for the J-D/F-M squad that included the Riley sisters, Fishkin, Glauber, Leibler-Bendix, Gracie Ayoub Abby Baumgartner, Maddy Chai, Cheyenne Danforth, Victoria Fazio, Teresa Femia, Kristen Gamble, Bridget McDonald, Jenny Newman,Mia Potamianos, Brielle Rohadfox, Cathy Zhan and Karen Zhan.
