They managed to beat the storms last Tuesday and finish most of Section III Class B girls track and field championships last Tuesday at Chittenango High School, and local athletes would find plenty of success.
Marcellus, again led by Rachel Garn, finished fifth in the Class B-1 meet, picking up 57 points, though Skaneateles prevailed with 100 points.
In a tough 1,500-mter race, Garn, in a time of four minutes, 57.44 seconds, held off CBA’s Maire-Kate McGlynn (4:59.01) to finish first. She later ran 800 meters in 2:24.60, outlasting Skaneateles’ Madeline Adams (2:26.29) and the rest of the field to prevail.
Johanna Sylcox threw the shot put 32 feet 11 ¼ inches, putting her in second place as sister Suzanna Sylcox (30’2”) was third and added a sixth in the discus. Kaitlyn Heath cleared 7 feet in the pole vault to share fourth place as Paige Manahan took fifth (4’4”) in the high jump.
Zoe Higgins also found points as she finished third in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:12.66, this following a fourth-place time of 18.06 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles final. Abbie Fallon was fifth (13.31 seconds) in the 100-meter dash as Haley Randall got sixth in the 400 hurdles behind Higgins.
Solvay got all of its points from the discus, where Belicia Nieves was third, heaving it 86’4”, with Jhanasia McBride fourth (81’3”) and Samantha Waters (79’6”) in fifth. Angela Frateschi was fourth in the pentathlon when storms arrived, halting the event.
In Class B-2, Jordan-Elbridge finished fifth out of 10 teams, with 54 points, as Adirondack (138 points) zoomed to the top, but the Eagles won four different events.
Brianna Byrnes, Julie Hines, Brittany Hares and Emily Weichert combined to take the 4×400 relay in a time of 4:19.08, with Adirondack (4:21.37) in second.
Individually, Byrnes needed 2:28.58 to prevail in the 800 by 2.26 seconds over Sherburne-Earlville’s Madeline Dubois. Weichert held off Adirondack’s Justine Lee, 1:11.22 to 1:11.53, in the 400 hurdles final, while Emily Hartwell got 1,052 point in a weather-shortened pentathlon.
Hines, in the 100-meter final, was second in 13.20 seconds to Ilion’s Elizabeth Belfast (13.03 seconds), while Mary Elizabeth Dristle ran to fourth (5:24.97) in the 1,500. Danielle Clark was fifth in the discus, heaving it 82’6”.
Just before this, on May 18, J-E’s boys team picked up 30 points at the Cicero-North Syracuse Invitational, finishing eighth in a 16-team field.
Dylan Whittico supplied the big moment in the 200-meter dash, winning that event in 23.09 seconds as C-NS’s Shawn Webb (23.45 seconds) and the rest of the field trailed.
Austin Whittico finished eighth, having qualified in 24.20 seconds, but running the final in 24.45 seconds, but he fared better in the 100, gaining sixth place in 11.89 seconds.
Tyler May was second in the discus, his heave of 129’6” topped only by Phoenix’s Jason Czyz, who won with 134’1”. May also took sixth in the shot put with 43’5 ½”.
Dylan Whittico, Austin Whittico, Zach Buchburger and Jacob Patterson took fourth in the 4×100 relay in 49.35 seconds, this after Patterson gained sixth (2:11.73) in the 800.
In the 4×800, Buchburger, David Fixler, Anthony Ortiz and Pat Fordyce were fourth in 10:42.88. Nate Hollis, eighth in the 800 behind Patterson, got sixth (11:29.78) in the 3,200-meter run.
