The revival of local indoor track and field continues as high school teams again begin to venture to Onondaga Community College’s SRC Arena for weekly meets.
That started with the Jack Morse Relays, where in Friday’s girls meet West Genesee nearly went to the top, putting up 38 points to tie Cicero-North Syracuse for third place. Fayetteville-Manlius and Liverpool shared top honors with 41 points.
Brianna Richardson helped the Wildcats win both of its events. First, in the 55-meter hurdles she was fourth in 9.94 seconds, with Emily Iles 14th, but it added up to 20.42 seconds, which was 0.15 seconds better than C-NS, who finished second.
It was nearly the same in the triple jump. Richardson was second among individuals, going 33 feet ½ inch, as she and seventh-place Abby Uczen had combined leaps of 63’2”, nearly a foot better than runner-up C-NS. By herself, Uczen, who was second in the pole vault by clearing 9’, garnered fourth-place team points.
Local sides went 1-2 in the shot put. Westhill/Bishop Ludden won as Bella Sterly was second among individuals with a throw of 31’9 ½” and Kayla Wild was sixth (29’ 2 ½”), which added up to 60’ 11 ¾”. That was enough to beat WG, who had Maureen McInerney (third) and Erica Fitch (fifth) throw it a combined 59’ 7 ½”.
Laura Leff teamed with Mary McGlynn, Sara Ferranti and Lindsay Weaver for a third-place time of 10:25.19 in the 4×800 relay.
Jordan-Elbridge’s best finish was in the 1,600 sprint medley, where Brianna Byrnes, Julie Hines, Bethanie Ermick and Alexis Malvasso get a time of 4:43.97 and finish in fourth place. Marcellus had Rachel Garn, Shannon Twombley, Molly McGuane and Eliza Bell get to sixth place in the distance medley relay, with Westhill/Ludden taking fifth in the 4×400 relay.
Two nights earlier, the boys Jack Morse Relays took place, with West Genesee tying for seventh place with 19 points and Jordan-Elbridge (16 points) finishing alone in 10th.
Solvay (10 points) and Marcellus (6.33 points) were further back, but that included the Bearcats’ victory in the high jump, where Brian McLeod, by himself, cleared 6 feet and that was enough for the full 10 points. The Mustangs’ Brian O’Connell (5’6”) tied for fourth.
WG got most of its points from the distance medley relay, where the quartet of Jack Erhard, Ethan Osborne, Pete Richardson and Nate Conroy prevailed in 11 minutes, 11.54 seconds. J-E was second in the distance medley as Dylan Whittico, Jacob Patterson, Austin Whittico and Jack Gugel finished in 11:25.36.
Later, in the 1,600 sprint medley, Gugel, the Whitticos and Bill DiRenzo gained second place in 3:52.33, edged out at the wire by Baldwinsville (3:52.31). Marcellus, with Brian O’Connell, Nate Waite, Will Coon and Justin Garn, were fourth in 3:58.64.
In the 4×800 relay, the Wildcats took the runner-up spot, watching Logan MacNulty, Andy Wells, Matt Romano and Mike Richards getting a time of 9:14.15, trailing only Cicero-North Syracuse, who prevailed in 9:04.09.
