About two dozen local and regional contractors attended the opening of construction bids for the new village hall renovation project on Wednesday, Nov. 12, to learn who is most likely to be hired for the five different contracts necessary for the work.
Four of the five contracts – general construction, plumbing, mechanical and electric – had four or more bids submitted for consideration, while the fifth contract – geothermal construction – had only two. Some of the bids differed by hundreds of thousands of dollars, others by only hundreds of dollars.
“We got good bids as far as competition,” said Mayor Marty Hubbard at the end of the bid opening meeting. “It takes all the uncertainty of the value out of it.”
All the members of the New Village Hall Steering Committee, which is overseeing the renovations to the Fennell Street fire station to turn it into the new village hall, were present for the bid opening, as was project architect Connie Brace.
The apparent low bidders for each of the five contracts were:

The total cost of the lowest base bids for all five contracts is $1,053,185. The sale proceeds for the current village hall building at 46 E. Genesee St., which will be used to fund the renovations, was $830,000. The village has already received or is awaiting reply for a number of state and federal grants, however, to offset the cost of the project.
The village board will discuss the bids at an operations meeting scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18, at village hall. Hubbard said he is hopeful that on that day the village will also receive a response from state officials about a major grant the village applied for.
