Still undefeated within the CNY Counties League, the Cicero-North Syracuse wrestling team prevailed again in Wednesday’s meet against West Genesee, working the ends well in the course of a 50-32 victory over the Wildcats.
The Northstars won all three matches in the lightest and heaviest weight classes, with two mat titles and one forfeit apiece.
At 99 pounds, Richard Dennis took just 1:48 to pin Travis Robbins. As Joe Barber (106 pounds) claimed a forfeit, Joe Mayers earned his own first-period fall at 113 pounds, needing nine fewer seconds than Dennis to finish off Mike Linton.
Moving to the other end of the scale, it was a near-replica, right down to the times of the pins and a forfeit in the middle to Jared West at 220 pounds.
David Griglock, working at 195 pounds, earned his pin over Caleb Blasczienski in 1:49. Working faster, Matt Mastro took just 91 seconds to pin 285-pound opponent Zach Valerino.
Nate Langstaff picked up C-NS’s other pin at 145 pounds, doing so against Liam Kotas with 17 seconds left in their match. Sam Ruiz (160 pounds) earned a 17-1 technical fall over Cody Ward, with Jeremy Rivera (138 pounds) getting past Odae Badwan in a 13-10 classic. Drew Dyer lost his 120-pound showdown to WG’s Tyler Heggelke 7-4.
Liverpool had a meet that same night, hosting Central Square, but other than an early surge could do little in a 59-21 defeat to the Red Hawks.
After Peter Nash lost the 120-pound opener to Blake Engebretsen, Anthony Ianno put the Warriors on the board at 126 when he pinned Zach Putnam. Mike Mills (132) followed with a pin over Max Emond, with Brian Carr prevailing at 138 over Ben Mayers in a decision.
Central Square would end all doubt about the outcome, though, by winning the next 10 matches. Only Darren Breen (152), Connor O’Conner (195) and Ron Wilson (220) went the full six minutes and lost decisions, the rest being pins and one injury default. Audey Ashkar, at 113, did close the meet by pinning the Red Hawks’ Lucas Spiker.
Both teams would go to weekend tournaments. Liverpool found itself at the Phoenix Round Robin, where it placed sixth out of nine teams with 126 points.
Ashkar, in the 113-pound final, fell to Midlakes’ Jason Charlet 8-3, and Dakota Inman got involved in a close final at 160, where he took an 8-4 defeat to Phoenix’s Justin Rhodes.
Mills pinned Jared Reiber (Wayne) in 5:04 for third place at 132, with Wilson getting his own third-period pin over Dalton Nuyman (Institute of Technology Central) for a third-place finish at 220. Nash, O’Conner, Anthony Ianno (120), Darren Breen (145) and Alex Jorgensen (99) all had fourth-place finishes.
C-NS, meanwhile, went to the Camden Classic, where it finished seventh out of 17 teams gathered with 119.5 points. South Jefferson (264.5 points) edged Webster Schroeder (248.5 points) for the team title.
Dyer made his way to the finals at 113, where Xiaodii Chen (Webster Schroeder), the meet’s Most Outstanding Wrestler, beat him with a second-period pin. Griglock ran into South Jefferson’s Ryan Cherlebois in the title match at 192 and lost in a first-period fall.
West finished third at 220, edging Casey Placito (Chittenango) 2-1 in overtime in the consolation bracket, and Andres Anoceto got to third at 285 with a 92-second pin over Mike Murdie (Ballston Spa). Mayers was fourth at 106, where Barber finished sixth, the same position as Joe Copani at 132.
