With the start of another indoor track season at hand, Cicero-North Syracuse wasted little time rising to the top.
The boys Northstars emerged victorious from a close battle with Baldwinsville during Wednesday’s Jack Morse Relays at Onondaga Community College’s SRC Arena, picking up 51.83 points as it held off the Bees, who were second with 47 points.
One important race turned out to be the 4×200 relay, where C-NS and B’ville went head-to-head. Mark Broughton, Avery Yarn, Shawn Webb and Nathan Hilt gave the Northstars a victory in a time of 1:35.16, just ahead of the Bees (1:35.53) at the wire.
C-NS also proved versatile by winning the 4×800 relay. Paul DeGennaro, Matt Crough, Evan Russell and Nick Erwin, in a time of 9:04.09, rolled through the field as the runner-up, West Genesee, was more than 10 seconds behind.
Also, the Northstars won the triple jump relay, where Morgan Austen and Bryson Mayes, finishing second and third among individuals, got combined attempts of 80 feet 10 ½ inches, more than three feet ahead of runner-up Tully.
Austen, on his own, won the 55-meter hurdles in 8.20 seconds, but was second on the team side with Tate LaPorte in 18.19 seconds, inches behind Fayeteville-Manlius (18.11). Cameron LaBarge was victorious in the pole vault as he cleared 11’6” with fewer misses than Carson Schwab (Skaneateles) and Zach Leibman (Jamesville-DeWitt), leading to a third-place team score.
Yarn, Hilt, Webb and Anthony Lupia were third in the 1,600 sprint medley in 3:54.76, while Dan Gulino cleared 5’6” in the high jump, tying for fourth. C-NS also tied for sixth in the 55-meter dash and was sixth alone in the long jump.
Far back in the standings, Liverpool, with 15 points, had to settle for 11th place, most of it from seeing Geoffrey Bell and Anthony Miller go 1-2 among individuals in the shot put, their throws adding up to 87’5”, more than five feet ahead of CBA (82’1”) in second place.
Connor Buck, Ryheim Lawes, Alex Christensen and Nick LeClair were fourth in the distance medley relay in 11:31.55, while the Warriors also took sixth in the sprint medley.
