Laker Limo, the non-profit service that offers transportation to Skaneateles senior citizens and people with disabilities, is expanding its services to include a food delivery program two days a week with prepared foods from Wegmans in Auburn.
“It’s our business to help seniors and the disabled, and this seemed like a good opportunity [to expand our services],” said Randy Stockweather, executive director for Laker Transportation Project, Inc., better known as Laker Limo. “I wish it was utilized more.”
The new service was not started because of the announced ending of the Skaneateles Meals on Wheels program, Starkweather said, but he is hopeful that people may be able to use it as an alternative.
Laker Limo started the food delivery program this past April with the intention of expanding their services and giving people who are otherwise unable an opportunity to get food and grocery necessities such as milk, bread or water. But the logistics of delivering certain grocery items became nebulous and Wegmans management instead suggested offering prepared meals at certain price points.
“We’re a transportation service looking for ways to improve our service,” Starkweather said. “Anyone can use the service – people not using Meals on Wheels can use it too.”
The new Wegmans food delivery service from Laker Limo will be available on Tuesdays and Thursdays. There are full meal selections at $6, $8 and $10 prices, each of which comes with two side dishes. Orders must be placed with the Wegmans prepared foods section (255-2231) at least two days in advance, and must be specified to be picked up by Laker Limo and charged to the Laker Limo shoppers club account.
Users must also call the Laker Limo reservation voicemail (685-3030) and leave personal information as well as the content of the food order for pickup, and a Laker Limo scheduler will call back to confirm the request.
People must be available to receive their delivery at home between 3 and 5 p.m. that day, and pay upon delivery with the exact amount.
Users of the food delivery service must be registered with Laker Limo, but registration is free and consists only of filling out the appropriate form, Starkweather said.
Laker Limo is a transportation service that can be utilized by senior citizens or disabled individuals who are residents within the Skaneateles School District boundaries. They collaborate with the Onondaga County Office of Aging and Youth.
Laker Limo is a free service to its users, although listed on the vehicle are suggested donations determined by the length of the trip. The suggested donation for the food delivery service is $1.
