Though the Baldwinsville girls swim team was unable to upend West Genesee from the top spot in the CNY Counties League, it still could take great pride in its 8-1 regular-season mark and second-place league finish.
And the Bees got one more chance to perform in front of the home crowd at Baker High School’s pool Tuesday night, producing a 49-41 victory over Fayetteville-Manlius.
It all started in the 200 medley relay, where B’ville’s quartet of Allie Connor, Charis Parker, Kaitlyn Martin and Cassandra Cherebin won in a time of 1:59.38. Another Bees’ team, consisting of Samantha Sidorakis, Emma Atkinson, Brooke Atkinson and Lauren Guild, finished in 2:09.41.
That was just the start for Connor, who went to the 200 individual medley and, in 2:30.05, edged out Brooke Atkinson (2:32.68) for the top spot. Then, in the 100 butterfly, Connor won in 1:06.89 as Emma Atkinson (1:08.71) claimed the runner-up position.
Martin would also win twice. To claim the 50 freestyle, Martin needed 27.05 seconds, with Sidorakis second in 27.49 seconds. Moving to the longest race, the 500 freestyle, she posted a time of 5:46.34 and prevailed again.
Margaret Walsh held off Elena Margrey, 2:13.91 to 2:15.32, to earn first place in the 200 freestyle, but Margrey rebounded to win the 100 freestyle in 1:01.77. Sidorakis stepped up and won the 100 backstroke in a clocking of 1:06.74, while Parker took the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.02.
Parker, Margrey, Connor and Martin roared to victory in the 200 freestyle relay in a time of 1:50.84. B’ville closed out the meet by seeing Sidorakis, Margrey, Walsh and Amanda Johnson work toward a victory in 4:08.37.
B’ville now looks ahead to the Section III championships, which run from Oct. 31 to Nov. 3 at Nottingham High School and determines berths in the Nov. 16-17 state meet at Ithaca College.
