Whatever else might be going on, the Skaneateles girls soccer team always wants to put up a tough fight when it faces main rival Marcellus.
But the Mustangs’ recent domination of this series continued in last Tuesday’s 3-0 decision, a game where the Lakers always found itself on its end of the field, desperately trying to fend off the wave of Marcellus attackers.
Mary Buck finished with 10 saves, but could not keep everything out. Goals by Lexy Bird and Jordin Wentworth in the first half put Marcellus out in front 2-0 before the break, and Claire Manahan tacked on a late goal.
Without any time to fret about it, the Lakers were back on the field Wednesday to face Bishop Ludden, and its patience led to a 2-0 victory over the Gaelic Knights.
Neither side scored in the first 40 minutes. Buck, on her way to five saves, and the Skaneateles defenders effectively cut off Ludden’s attacks, but it still wasn’t enough.
Then, in the second half, the Lakers got to Gaelic Knights keeper Gemma O’Kane as Tate Green and Catie Woodruff both put home goals, with Elizabeth Lane getting credit for an assist.
Back home Friday night to face Chittenango, the Lakers battled through the misty rain and worked its way to a 1-0 victory over the Bears.
It was Tate Green breaking the brief Skaneateles dry spell, scoring in the first half off a feed from Ali Pietropoli. For the rest of the game, the Lakers would apply pressure, but get nothing past Chittenango goalie Sierra Shafer, who made nine saves.
So Skaneateles had to cling to that one-goal edge, which it did by virtue of an effective defense that turned most Bears chances away, and when challenged, Buck recorded six saves.
Now the Lakers would look to build a win streak this week in back-to-back road games against Solvay and Phoenix.
