For as long as they’ve been together in the OHSL Freedom division, the Christian Brothers Academy and Jamesville-DeWitt boys soccer teams have mostly fought close, fierce battles.
That didn’t happen, though, when the two neighbors got together last Monday night at Alibrandi Stadium. The Brothers, with Andrew DePerro enjoying one of the best nights of his varsity career, defeated the Red Rams 4-0.
Simply put, J-D could not generate much of an attack, forcing itself to rely on its back line to keep shots away from the Rams’ goalkeeper, Nate Sturgeon.
For the night, Sturgeon had 13 saves, and he kept the game 1-0 going to halftime. But in the latter stages DePerro kept getting open, and his conversions allowed CBA to pull clear.
Overall, DePerro had three goals for the hat trick, while Matt Marzocchi managed one goal and one assist. Matt DePerro helped out his older brother by getting a pair of assists, while Tim Corapi also got an assist.
Both teams played on Thursday night. CBA held off Homer 3-1, as it did the same thing as with J-D, grabbing a 1-0 halftime lead and pulling away later.
And once again, it was DePerro proving unstoppable, landing all three of his team’s goals for a second consecutive hat trick. Marzocchi earned two assists, with Jared Sayles also earning an assist.
J-D, meanwhile, went to Fulton and played the Red Raiders to a 0-0 draw. The Red Rams’ defense did a superb job of protection, holding Fulton to just three shots, but in 100 minutes of action could get nothing past Red Raiders goalie Rob Borrow, who made six saves.
East Syracuse-Minoa had a chance to get a big win last Tuesday, when it hosted unbeaten, state Class A no. 5-ranked Fowler, but it could not hold to an early lead in a 3-2 defeat to the Falcons.
And it was an early lead, gained just 30 seconds into the contest when Dan MacDougal’s long shot found the net. Then the Spartans made it 2-0 when Dan Lewis took a similar shot and converted. MacDougal and Lewis assisted on each other’s scoring plays.
However, Fowler’s Vincent Ndarbaruta turned it all around. First, Ndarbaruta converted late in the first half, cutting it to 2-1, and his second-half tally pulled the Falcons even.
Finally, with 3:30 left, Ndarabaruta again flashed open in front of the net and pushed a shot past ESM goalie Cameron Schiavone, which proved the game-winner.
Two days later, the Spartans rebounded with a convincing 6-1 victory over Mexico, grabbing a 3-0 edge by halftime and never getting caught as it took 19 shots overall.
Chris Schiavone, with his three assists, set up the attack, which included a pair of goals from Jacob Kohlbrenner. Lewis, Cole Belcher, Dane Greabell and Emir Avdakovic earned one goal apiece, while Tyler Ott and T.J. Burns also gained assists.
