The East Syracuse Village Board is taking action in response to what the mayor calls “cyberbullying” among village employees.
“We’ve had issues with people that have made personal attacks on their Facebook page about fellow village employees, and I’m gonna put a stop to it,” Mayor Danny Liedka said following Tuesday’s village board meeting.
The board passed a motion Tuesday to adopt Internet and email guidelines, a use of the Internet policy and a cyberbullying policy. Liedka said the cyberbullying has been going on “for a little while, and we’ve taken our time to do our homework on it.” The policy will allow the village to discipline its employees in cases of personal attacks made online.
“It’s hard to administer discipline without a written policy,” Liedka said.
The level of discipline would depend on the intensity of the cyberbulling, and would be at the discretion of the board, he said.
“That’s for the board to decide at the time,” the mayor said. “It could be a suspension, it could be a written warning, it could be termination. We’ve had several demeaning comments made, and I’m proud of my employees — I’m not going to allow them to be demeaned.”
