The DeWitt Town Board is taking a closer look at the health insurance provided to town employees in an effort to cut costs.
At its meeting Aug. 13, the board approved unanimously the hire of Benefits Consulting Group to perform a third-party analysis of the town’s healthcare plan at a cost of $14,000.
“During arbitration with the Police Benevolent Association, it was agreed that we would take a comprehensive look at the health benefits offered by the town,” said Councilor Brian Schultz, who headed up the consultant selection committee. “Since there is not a separate healthcare plan for just the PBA, the consultant will be looking at our healthcare plan as it pertains to all employees.”
The town currently spends approximately $1.8 million annually on healthcare, Schultz said. He said the town is not obligated to change plans.
“If we find out that there is a better option, we would pursue this by working with all of the bargaining units in the town that are covered by the town’s healthcare plan,” he said.
