Cazenovia’s boys tennis team concentrated its strength into doubles for the Section III Class B tournament, held early this week at Utica Parkway Courts. And the duo of Pat Marris and John Lyga went all the way to the championship in the second doubles division.
In the semifinals, Marris and Lyga earned a 6-2, 6-3 sweep over the Marcellus tandem of Shane Barner and Andrew Herold.
Then, in the championship match against Jamesville-DeWitt’s Amir Nazem and Jim Quartier, Marris and Lyga claimed the first set 6-4, lost the second set 6-3 and rallied to take the decisive third set by that same 6-4 margin for the sectional title.
Up in first doubles, Lee Cudney and Sam Concilla also reached the title match by virtue of their 6-4, 6-2 win over Chittenango’s Tanner Makowski and Connor Delaney.
Once there, though, Cudney and Concilla ran into another J-D duo, Abe Davis and Steve Procopio, who prevailed in a 7-6, 6-1 final. Delaney and Makowski rallied past Dylan Duchene and Ian Yahnke (Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 for third place.
All of them advanced to the weekend’s state qualifier, split between Utica Parkway and Syracuse University’s SkyTop Courts. The top three singles and doubles finishers advanced to this weekend’s state tournament at the USTA National Tennis Center in Queens.
In the sectional team standings in Class B, Cazenovia had 34 points, putting them in third place, while Chittenango had nine points. J-D, with 61 points, edged CBA (54 points) to finish in front.
