With an April full of big-time match-ups behind them (and a 1-3 mark against nationally-ranked teams), the Jamesville-DeWitt boys lacrosse team settled into May and pummeled anything in its path.
In particular, the Red Rams fumed about its April 28 loss to state Class A no. 2-ranked Fairport, where it led 8-2, only to give it all away and lose, 11-10, on a Red Raiders goal in the waning seconds of regulation.
Three nights later, J-D unloaded that anger on Chittenango in a 25-3 romp that included 18 goals in the first half alone.
Jordan Evans, with five goals and one assist, and Deke Burns, with three goals and three assists, led the onslaught. Griffin Feiner (three goals), Jeff Edwards (two goals, three assists) and Mike Engstrom (two goals, two assists) were close behind.
Ali Akyuz and Ryan Wright also scored twice. McLaren Brady, Mike Perkins, Lucas Johnson, Colin Stone, Adam Goss, Brendan Flanagan and Lucas Phillips got goals, too, as Hank Wilson and Mike Mulvihill added assists.
A day later, the Red Rams met a tougher opponent, Cortland, but did much the same thing, getting seven unanswered goals in the second quarter and leading 12-1 at halftime on the way to pasting the Purple Tigers 18-4.
Burns continued to catch fire, with four goals and four assists, while Feiner also found the net four times. Evans had four assists to go with his lone tally as Akyuz scored twice. Johnson got a goal and two assists as Brady, Edwards, Perkins, Flanagan, Ryan Wright and Mike Engstrom also converted.
Though J-D was playing for the third time in as many days when it got Fulton on Thursday, it didn’t slow things down a bit as the Red Rams routed the Red Raiders 21-3.
Any doubts went away when J-D scored 11 times in the second quarter to expand its lead to 14-3. Evans, with five goals and three assists, set the pace as Burns got four goals and Brady found the net three times. Edwards got three assists as Perkins and Wright each got two goals. Johnson, Flanagan, Goss and Jesse Evensky earned the other goals.
In girls lacrosse, Jamesville-DeWitt, off a defeat to Mexico on April 28, rebounded with its own offensive blitz last Tuesday against Chittenango, doubling up the Bears 20-10.
Each half went 10-5 in the Red Rams’ favor. Taylor Fallon piled up four goals and five assists, with Taylor Bierwagen also finding the net four times. Caroline Kopp had three goals and two assists, while Lauren Beville had two goals and two assists. Sonia Narsipur also found the net twice. Kayleigh Cavanaugh, Carly Stone, Emily Aziz and Natalie Antosh also scored.
Again, though, J-D could not sustain that momentum, falling to Fulton 16-11 on Thursday afternoon as the Red Raiders took command in the first half, doubling the Rams’ total and moving in front 10-5.
Even with Cavanaugh’s three goals and Narsipur’s pair of goals, J-D could not come back. Kopp, Fallon and Beville each had one goal and one assist, with Stone, Bierwagen and Caitlin Cariseo also held to single goals. Erica Knaub (six goals, three assists) and Kate Rothrock (four goals, one assist) anchored the Fulton attack.
Much of the rest of the regular-season slate takes place this week, including twin games against East Syracuse-Minoa, along with matches pitting J-D with Whitesboro and Cortland.
