After a weekend to absorb its April 20 defeat to Baldwinsville, the Liverpool girls lacrosse team quickly reclaimed its winning form.
Capping a 3-0 week, the Warriors went to Fayetteville-Manlius Saturday afternoon and, for the second time in a month, beat the Hornets, this one an 11-8 decision.
Much like the April 10 encounter (which the Warriors won 9-5), Liverpool took control in the first half, steadily converting until it had a 7-3 edge at the break. Though F-M would step up in the second half and make a series of charges, it could not catch up.
Mallorie O’Brien had one of the best games of her varsity career, finding the net five times. Mary Fadden chimed in with two goals, while Lauren Mancini, Kylie Long, Andrea Flood and Morgan Kline notched single goals. In the net, Marissa Gabriel recorded seven saves.
On a chilly Monday night at LHS Stadium, the Warriors scraped past Central Square 10-4. Each half went 5-2, Liverpool controlling the game’s tempo and reclaiming some of its defensive edge after the early struggles at B’ville.
Mancini had three goals and one assist. Fadden, O’Brien and Kline each scored twice, with Flood feeding all of them as she got three assists to go with her lone tally.
In between the two league games, the Warriors had to go to Watertown, which proved quite a challenge as, with a late push, Liverpool got past the Cyclones 9-7.
It took a while for Liverpool for get over the long bus ride and adjust to Watertown’s pressure. By the time they reached the half, the Warriors trailed 5-2, and stared at a damaging defeat.
Together, Flood and Mancini made sure that didn’t happen, though. Liverpool started winning more of the draws in the second half and attacked the net, finding success and surging into a lead it would not relinquish.
Flood finished with four goals, while Mancini managed three goals for the second straight game. O’Brien and Long had the other goals, with Fadden and Natalie Perkins adding assists. Gabriel earned six saves.
The win over F-M improved Liverpool’s mark to 8-3, and it should be favored for each of its remaining regular-season games, including contests this week against the combined Syracuse city squad and Auburn.
