Back in a familiar setting, the Cazenovia girls indoor track and field team knocked off eight opponents to win the Independents Invitational Friday night at Colgate University’s Sanford Field House.
The Lakers, who had not competed since its win at the Bob Grieve Invitational on Jan. 16, shook off the 12 days of rest and, with 148.66 points, soared to the top as Rome Free Academy (94.33 points) took second place in the meet held alongside the Center State Conference Championships, won by West Canada Valley.
Cazenovia swept all three relays. Jillian Vogl, Caroline Marshall, Ashley Winn and Caroline Marshall roared to victory in the 4×400 in 4:16.79. Marshall joined Jeannette Cudney, Grace Milmoe and Margaret Wolsey as the Lakers claimed the 4×800 relay in 10:17.51, while Winn and Vogl, along with Ashley Kent and Emily Willard, won the 4×200 in 1:52.67.
Winn, on her own, rolled to victory in the 300-meter dash in 43.40 seconds. Marshall also took the 600-meter run, holding off Oneida’s Kim DeCarr, 1:45.13 to DeCarr’s 1:45.53, as Jeannette Cudney was third in 1:48.70. Vogl got third in the 55-meter dash in 7.81 seconds.
Margaret Wolsey, in 3:19.46, held off RFA’s Jasmine Meerdink (3:19.83) to win the 1,000-meter run. Rae Tobey (11:22.82) and Tori Wright (12:21.57) were second and third, respectively, in the 3,000-meter run, with Tobey fourth and Wright fifth in the 1,500-meter run.
Paige Biviano won the long jump, going 16 feet 10 inches. She also ran the 55-meter hurdles in 9.35 seconds, second to Cicero-North Syracuse’s Katie Osborne (8.88 seconds), and got second in the high jump (5 feet 3 inches) as Willard (4 feet 9 inches) was third.
Milmoe had a third-place triple jump of 29 feet 10 1/4 inches. Molly Woodworth was fifth (28 feet 2 inches) in the shot put, while Hannah Dain was fourth in the weight throw, ahead of Holly Eberle (fifth) and Kortney Burdin (sixth). Annika Christensen and Maria vanNieuwland tied for fourth in the pole vault.
In the boys Independent Invitational at Colgate, Cazenovia rose to second place with 82 points. Only RFA, with 132 points, fared better. Dylan Muller earned the Lakers’ lone title, in the pole vault, where he was the only competitor to clear 12 feet.
Billy Bigsby got second in the 3,200-meter run in 10:32.52, with Sean Satchwell fourth in 10:41.92, and Bigsby also ran to second (5:06.52) in the mile. David Ayer, Teddy Tormey, Nick Tedesco and Alex Devine were second in the 4×400 in 4:00.90.
Cameron Braathen had a third-place shot put toss of 39 feet 6 1/2 inches, and he was fourth in the weight throw (36 feet 3 3/4 inches) as Matt Staiger was fifth. Dylan Muller was third (36 feet 11 1/2 inches) and Doyle Judge (34 feet 8 1/2 inches) were third and fourth, respectively, in the triple jump.
Ayer, Muller, Judge and Matt Donovan were fourth in the 4×200. Anthony Randino got to fifth in the 55 hurdles, with Ryker Smith fifth in the long jump and triple jump. Judge and Smith tied for fifth in the high jump, each clearing 5 feet 4 inches.
Chittenango had 40 points, including Lucas Rogers getting to second place in the 1,000 in 3:01.23. Jason Given took second in the 600 in 1:28.90. The Bears’ quartet of Isaac Czarnecki, Jon Roberts, Jake Teeter and Kenny Galbraith were second in the 4×800 in 9:50.71. Roberts was fourth in the mile in 5:09.43, with Galbraith fifth.
