Baldwinsville’s wrestling team did not go as far as Central Square during the Jan. 21 Section III Dual Meet, falling in the opening round as the Red Hawks made it to the quarterfinals.
But when the two sides met at Central Square Wednesday night, it was the Bees taking control with six pins that accounted for the mast majority of points in a 49-26 victory.
Pat Nasoni, at 220 pounds, picked up his team’s quickest pin, finishing off D.J. Patchen in 1:22. He was slightly quicker than Anthony Rafkis (160 pounds), who pinned Jake Fortune in 1:27, and Brent Grippe (170 pounds), who needed 1:28 to pin Steve Guerin.
Chad McArdell, wrestling at 126 pounds, pinned Nick Phillips right at the end of the first period. Jake Norton (138 pounds) took 2:56 to pin Nathan Rogers as Tim Sposato, at 113 pounds, gained his pin over Lucas Spiker in 3:29.
As Kevin Paul (106 pounds) gained an 8-0 shutout of Blake Engebretsen, other Bees wrestlers were involved in closer decisions. Steve Petrelli (145 pounds) fell to Dillan Purdy 5-4, just before James Eustice (152 pounds) had an 11-9 defeat to Jerrett Norton.
At 120 pounds, Jabr Bengabr took a 7-5 defeat to Ben Mayers as Connor Ross (132 pounds) lost to Josh Brown 15-9.
In a non-league meet on Friday night, B’ville faced the combined CBA/Jamesville-DeWitt entry, and used a late comeback to prevail by a score of 40-29.
Down 29-21 with four matches left, Sposato began the rally by pinning Arsen Bagiryan in 54 seconds, and Bengabor followed with a 14-2 romp of Lucas Rowe to put B’ville in front. When McArdell beat Matt Lauro 9-2, the Bees clinched the team win, Ross applying a further cushion by pinning Brad Carr in 35 seconds.
Of the first 10 matches, CBA/J-D won six of them. Eustice got his team on the board with a 4-0 shutout of Tucker Benedict and Gunner Stuphen (170) pinned Paul D’Antonio in 1:58.
Rafkis dropped a 2-0 decision to Mark Friske, while Joe Nasoni (182) had the same sort of battle, falling 3-1 to Ben Honis. Right after, Pat Nasoni pinned Ted Pappas in 54 seconds and Jake Florack (220 pounds) got a pin over Zach Shapiro in 1:01.
B’ville will take on Fayetteville-Manlius next Wednesday night, before going back to Cicero-North Syracuse Feb. 4 for the Section III Class AA tournament, which starts at 9 a.m. Top qualifiers advance to the Section III championships Feb. 11 at Onondaga Community College’s SRC Arena.
