Liverpool’s girls basketball team welcomed the rest at the end of a stretch where, in eight days, it had played five times, starting with the quadruple-overtime defeat to West Genesee on Jan. 12.
That stretch ended in a big way Friday night as the Warriors, fueled by hot 3-point shooting, upended Baldwinsville by a score of 51-39.
Ignoring all of its possible fatigue from the busy stretch and not flinching in the face of a 9-2 opponent, Liverpool worked its way to a 26-21 halftime lead. Then it traded baskets until limiting B’ville to six points in the fourth quarter in its getaway.
Shannon Seymour fueled the Warriors all night, hitting on four 3-pointers to account for most of her 16 points. Rachael Windhausen stepped up, too, earning 12 points, while Lyteshia Price got seven of her 11 points at the free-throw line. Megan Corcoran hit a pair of 3-pointers, too.
In addition, Liverpool’s defense did a solid job containing B’ville star Maggie Monnat, who managed 16 points, but just four field goals, far behind her 35-point effort in a win over Henninger earlier in the week.
Following that four-OT battle with West Genesee, the Warriors went 1-1 for a third-place finish in the Juggler Classic at Utica-Notre Dame on Jan. 14-15, and got just one day of rest before another long road trip, this one to Auburn.
Liverpool beat the Maroons 56-42. Once ahead 22-12 in the first half, the Warriors saw Auburn go on a 10-0 run to tie it, 26-26.
That led to the game’s decisive sequence at the end of the half. A basket by Price, consecutive steals and lay-ups from Jacy Kocan and another steal and basket from Price suddenly had the Warriors in front 34-26 going to the break.
Then Liverpool stretched out the margin to 51-36 by the end of the third period. Price led the mid-game charge and finished with 18 points, while Windhausen stepped up with 14 points and Kocan gained 12 points.
The win over B’ville pushed Liverpool back above the .500 mark – 8-7, to be exact – and it gets to rest this week, not returning to the court until Jan. 31, when it hosts Corcoran.
