Both of the area’s boys swim teams got together on Saturday night, and it proved memorable for Fayetteville-Manlius as it defeated Jamesville-DeWitt/CBA by a score of 96-86.
Until the final two races, the outcome was in question. But in the 100 breastroke, the Hornets’ Paul Topor prevailed in 1:10.93, and F-M’s 400 freestyle relay quartet of Kevin Koh, Will Twichell, Zach Swanson and Luke Oliverio clinched the team victory with a time of 3:38.59.
Koh had already won three times in the meet. Individually, he tore through the 200 freestyle in 1:49.69 and needed just 52.72 seconds to prevail in the 100 butterfly, and Koh, along with Twichell, Oliverio and Nate Green, claimed the 200 freestyle relay in 1:40.95.
F-M also nabbed individual titles from Swanson, who swam the 500 freestyle in 5:19.56, and Oliverio, who took the 50 freestyle in 23.87 seconds.
Not that J-D/CBA was quiet in this contest. Garrett Farchione was a force, winning both the 100 freestyle (52.65 seconds) and 100 backstroke (1:01.56), and combining with Will Farnsworth, Kevin Potocki and McMillen Judge to win the 200 medley relay in 1:53.08. Potocki was first in the 200 individual medley in 2:17.17.
With its holiday rest over, the Hornets started 2012 with a strong effort against Cicero-North Syracuse last Wednesday night, beating the Northstars 101-69 at Nottingham High School.
Koh needed just 53.05 seconds to prevail in the 100 butterfly after zooming to victory in the 200 freestyle in 1:49.24, and took part in four victories overall.
In the 200 freestyle relay, Koh, Twichell, Oliverio and Chris Rettinger earned first place in 1:36.90. Later, in the 400 freestyle relay, Twichell and Koh joined Swanson and Green as F-M prevailed in 3:32.55.
On his own, Rettinger took the 200 individual medley (2:25.46), while Twichell swam the 50 freestyle in 24.12 seconds and Swanson won the 500 freestyle in 5:15.38. Oliverio stepped in to win the 100 freestyle in 53.01 seconds before Paul Topor took the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.96.
F-M, in fact, swept all three relays, starting in the 200 medley, where Topor, Green, Oliverio and Harry Rube posted a top time of 1:54.39.
A day later, Jamesville-DeWitt/CBA was back in action, and it stayed unbeaten with a convincing 100-78 victory over New Hartford.
Farchione, Cole Speidel and Cory Knapp each won twice. Speidel went to work in the 200 IM, prevailing in 2:07.97, and moved on to the 100 butterfly, where he won in 56.70 seconds.
Knapp swam the 200 freestyle in 1:54.70 and was first in the 500 freestyle in 5:14.17, while Farchione followed up a victory in the 100 freestyle (52.86 seconds) by swimming the 100 backstroke in 1:00.86.
Alex Deiroff, with 150.7 points, took top honors in diving, with Potocki beating the field in the 50 freestyle in 24.17 seconds. Farchione, Speidel, Knapp and Potocki covered the 200 medley relay in 1:49.81, and the same quartet returned to win the 400 freestyle relay in 3:33.03.
