Wins from Liz Pieri and Sierra Vasilliou helped push the Jamesville-DeWitt girls indoor track and field team fend off Fayetteville-Manlius for the top spot in Friday’s George Constatino Memorial Invitational at Onondaga Community College’s SRC Arena.
The Red Rams finished with 60 points, while the Hornets got 47 points. East Syracuse-Minoa rose to 10th place, picking up 14 points.
Pieri would earn a victory in the 300-meter dash, her time of 44.61 seconds topping Fowler’s Kamisha Tucker (45.01 seconds) and the rest of the field. Vasiliou, in the long jump, went 15 feet 6 1/2 inches to hold off Cicero-North Syracuse’s Brittany Murphy (15 feet 3 3/4 inches) for top honors as F-M’s Heather Martin (14 feet 10 1/4 inches) was fourth.
J-D also saw Danielle Doss (8 feet 6 inches) and Katy Pieri (8 feet) take second and third, respectively, in the pole vault, while Patrece Martin was fourth in the triple jump with 32 feet 7 1/4 inches. Jesenia Haynes was sixth in the shot put.
On the oval for the Rams, Noelle Novakowski was fourth in the 55-meter hurdles, edging teammate Amanda Lee, 10.27 seconds to 10.28. Emilee Carpenter took fifth in the 3,000-meter run (11:25.51) and Vasiliou got sixth in the 55-meter dash.
F-M made inroads in the 4×800 relay, where Katie Sischo, Hannah Smith, Jillian Fanning and Katie Brislin prevailed in 9:34.66 as J-D’s quartet of Carpenter, Rachel Fairbanks, Samantha Clemons and Laura Wengert was second in 10:23.34.
Over in the 4×400, the Hornets won again, Brislin joining Marri Ryu, Natalie Zazzara and Olivia Ryan for a top time of 4:13.30. J-D had Doss Novakowski, Liz Pieri and Katy Pieri claim fourth place in 4:24.46. Individually, the Hornets’ Alana Pearl took the 3,000-meter run in 10:36.44, with ESM’s Gabby Pallotta third (10:58.76) and the Hornets’ Maggie Malone fourth.
ESM’s Amanda Wall rose to second place in the triple jump, going 32 feet 11 1/4 inches, as the Hornets’ Mary Barger took a close second (3:14.18) to Marcellus’ Rachel Garn (3:13.65) in the 1,000-meter run.
In the boys portion of the Constantino meet, F-M earned 51 points, second only to CNS, who won with 65 points. J-D tied for fourth with 24 points.
Austin Perez and Langston Lightcap gave the Hornets a 1-2 finish in the 300 sprint, Perez winning in 36.65 seconds and Lightcap second in 38.22 seconds. Lightcap also helped Hamza Elhabbal, Charlie Beeler and Aaron Blitz to second in the 4×400 relay in 3:42.10, with J-D’s foursome of Zach Liebmann, Will Sterriker, Nate Sturgeon and Navale Taylor third in 3:43.41.
Nick Ryan had to settle for third place in the 1,000 in 2:38.98, with Ben Thomas (2:42.94), both of them trailing ESM’s Mike Coogan, who with a time of 2:35.55 beat the field by nearly two seconds.
CBA’s Brendan Smith won the 3,200-meter run in 9:33.07, pulling away from F-M’s Bryce Millar (9:51.20) and the rest of the field. Millar, Ryan, Ben Thomas and Colin Fitzgibbons were third in the 4×800 relay in 8:39.92.
Also for J-D, Sterriker rose to second in the 55 hurdles in 8.20 seconds, with Sturgeon sixth. Liebmann cleared 11 feet for third place in the pole vault. Ryan Peters got fifth in the shot put (40 feet 4 inches) as F-M’s Zhengyue Zhu added a fifth in the triple jump (39 feet 3 inches) and sixth in the long jump.
All of these local teams are back at SRC Arena next Friday for an appearance at the Bob Grieve Memorial Invitational.
