In two different venues over a 24-hour span, local indoor track and field teams found varying degrees of success.
First, at Friday’s George Constatntino Memorial Invitaitonal at Onondaga Community College’s SRC Arena, Westhill/Bishop Ludden finished third in the boys event with 30 points, while Marcellus got wins on both sides, too.
For Westhill/Ludden, Corey Wilkinson and Tre Feisner went 1-2 in the shot put, Wilkinson winning with a toss of 44 feet 9 inches and Feisner getting the runner-up spot with 40 feet 11 ¼ inches. Jack Honis would speed to victory in the 55-meter hurdles in 7.95 seconds, well clear of Jamesville-DeWitt’s Will Sterriker (8.20 seconds) and the rest of the field.
Marcellus, who had 19 points to tie for seventh place, saw Brian O’Connell take third (5 feet 10 inches) and Ryan Manahan fourth (5 feet 8 inches) in the high jump.
John Bell was fourth in the 1,000-meter run in 2:40.57, with Justin Garn (2:49.07) sixth. Rob Coon cleared 10 feet 6 inches for fourth in the pole vault, ahead of Westhill/Ludden’s Mike Herholtz (10 feet) in fifth.
In the girls part of the Constantino meet, Marcellus rose to ninth place with 16 points, mainly through Rachel Garn winning the 1,000 in a time of 3:13.65, edging out Fayetteville-Manlius’ Mary Barger (3:14.18) for that top spot. Daniella Henie earned the other points, clearing 4 feet 10 inches for fourth place in the shot put.
Westhill/Ludden, who grabbed 14 points to tie for 10th, saw Betsy Black rise to second place in the 3,000-meter run in 10:57.63, while Emily Mizer took fourth (45.13) in the 300 sprint. Black, Jessica Curry, Molly Clark and Annibel Coolican were fifth in the 4×800 relay, while Jordan-Elbridge’s Megan Greenwood got fourth in the shot put with a toss of 29 feet ½ inch.
West Genesee chose not to compete in the Constantino meet, instead going to Cornell University’s Barton Hall (annual site of the state championships) for the Southern Tier Invitational.
There, Laura Leff displayed her talent again, the Wildcats sophomore tearing to victory in the 1,500-meter run in 4:33.98, more than 25 seconds ahead of the runner-up, Brockport’s Autumn Albrecht.
Kelly Powell also contended, in the 600, where she was fourth in 1:45.83, while Abby Kastick was ninth in the 3,000. Leff, Amy Hannahan, Rebecca Rothenburg and Paris Archung were fifth in the 4×800 in 10:18.09.
On the boys side, WG’s quartet of Martin Leff, Mark Reilly, Ethan Osborne and Nate Conroy gained fourth place in the 4×800 in 8:33.53. On his own, Leff rose to sixth in the 3,200 in 9:57.13, while Luke Potash was 10th in the 300 sprint.
Most of the local teams expect to be back at SRC Arena this Friday for the Bob Grieve Memorial Invitational.
