Twice in the first week of 2011, the Cazenovia girls indoor track and field team went to Colgate University’s Sanford Field House to vie for top honors in the Mohawk Valley Indoor Track Association Partner Relays, and won easily on both occasions.
In the first of them last Tuesday night, the Lakers again finished on top, picking up 138 points to leave Rome Free Academy (94 points) and the rest of the 10-team field behind.
Ashley Winn would run the 55-meter dash in 7.50 seconds, the 200-meter dash in 26.41 seconds, the 300-meter dash in 42.74 seconds and the 400-meter dash in 1:02.18, winning all those contests.
Team-wise, Winn went 1-2 with Grace Milmoe (1:10.15) in the 400 as she also combined with Emily Willard in the 300 (1:30.50) and Liz Pittman for another victory in the 55 sprint in 15.77 seconds. Winn and Ashley Kent were first in the 200 in 56.61 seconds.
Paige Biviano went 16 feet 10 ½ inches in the long jump and improved to 9.12 seconds in the 55 hurdles, taking first in both of those team events with Kent as she added a second with Willard in the high jump, clearing 9 feet 6 inches between them.
Jeannette Cudney won the 800-meter run in 2:36.58, teaming with Rae Tobey (third, 2:43.92) for team honors. It was much the same in the 3,000-meter run, where Cudney got first place in 11:13.09 and Tobey took third (11:56.36) to produce another 10 points.
Caroline Marshall took the 600-meter run in 1:45.16, earning a team title with Megan Stanford in a combined 3:35.27. Molly Woodworth and Sarah Haley got second (52 feet 6 ½ inches) in the shot put and fourth in the weight throw.
Maria vanNeiuwland and Madison Gabor ran to third in the 500-meter event in 3:19.43. Emma Wolsey and Evelyn Wells gained third in the 1,500-meter run (11:59.34) as Pittman and Hannah Light-Olson rose to third in the triple jump with total leaps of 56 feet 4 inches.
Cazenovia had 63 points on the boys side, rising to fifth place, not far from Clinton’s winning total of 93 points.
David Ayer, second in the 400 among individuals, combined with Teddy Tormey to win that event in a total time of 2:00.19. Billy Bigsby rose to second place in the boys 3,200-meter run in 10:53.50 and, with Sean Satchwell, claimed first place, team-wise, in 22:26.30.
Anthony Randino and Matt Donovan were second in the 55-meter dash in 14.42 seconds, with the same pair getting third place in the 200 sprint in 50.13 seconds. Dylan Muller and Doyle Judge were fourth in the 300 sprint in 1:19.93 as Muller, individually, cleared 11 feet 3 inches for second place in the pole vault.
Bigsby and Satchwell also were fourth in the 800 as Chittenango’s Jason Given and Lucas Rogers were third in 4:29.28. Jon Roberts and Kenny Galbraith gave the Bears a third-place time of 10:24.03 in the mile relay, where the Lakers were fifth.
Cameron Braathen and Matt Staiger earned third place in the weight throw with combined heaves of 75 feet 9 inches. Ayer and Tormey were fifth in the 500 as Randino and Ryker Smith rose to fifth in the long jump. Smith and Muller went 67 feet 7 inches for fourth place in the triple jump.
Friday’s second portion of the Partner Relays brought another win for the girls Lakers, the point total inching up to 141 and the record books assaulted by Biviano.
Biviano set two schools marks by winning the 55 hurdles in 9.08 seconds and clearing 5 feet 4 inches in the high jump. She teamed with Kent and Willard for team honors in those events and was first in the long jump, going 15 feet 8 ¾ inches as she and Beth Marcelle tied for second overall.
Winn again took the 55 (7.59 seconds) and 300 (42.94 seconds), adding a 500-meter title in 1:30.13 ahead of Milmoe (1:30.75), while Jillian Vogl returned to capture the 200 in 27.11 seconds and the 400 in 1:04.08, going 1-2 with Jackie O’Sullivan in the latter event.
Marshall claimed the 800 in 2:26.62, with Milmoe fourth as she and Cudney teamed for a victory in the 600 in 3:35.46. In the 1,000, Marshall won in 3:11.30 and Cudney (3:14.38) was right behind her.
Tobey and Wolsey rose to second in the 1,500 (10:41.90), with Tobey and Cudney third in the 3,000. Woodworth and Carly Hazer were second (51 feet 8 inches) in the shot put, while vanNieuwlaand and Glenna Kehelan got to third (11 feet) in the pole vault.
Improving with each outing, the Cazenovia boys picked up 85 points and rose to third place, trailing only Clinton (104 points) and RFA (98 points) in the standings.
Donovan won the 400 in 57.59 seconds and Ayer (58.04 seconds) completed a 1-2 Laker sweep. Bigsby joined in when he won the 3,200 in a clocking of 10:52.75, combining with Satchwell to edge Ilion, 22:20.97 to 22:21.46, on the team side. Muller won the pole vault by clearing 12 feet 8 inches and, with Bigsby, tied for second overall.
Muller and Judge earned second in the 200 with a combined 50.01 seconds, with Randino joining Muller for a runner-up spot (1:18.60) in the 300. Bigsby and Satchwell got third in the 800 (4:29.20). Nick Tedesco and Alan Devine took third in the 500, while Donovan and Randino were fourth in the 55 sprint.
Chittenango had 26 points, many of them from Given, who won the 600 in 1:29.85 and helped Lucas Rogers take third. Roberts and Galbraith were third in the mile (10:26.52), where Cazenovia was fifth. Given and Rogers were third (6:04.55) in the 1,000.
In field events, Judge and Smith had a third-place showing in the triple jump (70 feet 3 ½ inches), while Donovan and Ryker Smith took fourth in the long jump. Braathen and Staiger got fourth in the weight throw, with Randino joining Braathen for fourth in the shot put.
All of this leads to Tuesday night’s MVITA Championships, also at Colgate.
